Truck has sat for a few months. I know it need an oil change because it's probably been at least a two years since it's been changed. I also I know the engine fuel filter is the one that came from the factory (though truck came from factory with a different engine). And I have a small mis-fire due to a "shakey" distributor cap. But anyways, my main concern is that I took it out the other and stomped on it. Now I know the carb jets are dirty and the carb needs a rebuild anyway, so when I stomp on it from a dead stop, it acts like it's gonna die but then it gets going. However, the other day, like I said, I wanted to stretch it's legs but instead of rev-ing down and then accelerating, it rev-ed down, and then continued at the same speed I was goin before, but VERY VERY VERY slowly accelerating. I had virtrually no power at all. What should I do?
What do you mean by a "shakey" distributor cap? As in it's loose? If that's the case, you need to eliminate that issue first. Distributor caps are cheap. While it's not likely that it's causing the specific issue you're seeing, you won't be able to go down a practical troubleshooting path until that's resolved. You can't resolve one issue when you already know about another one, because everything is inter-related. Otherwise it will be impossible to isolate what symptoms are coming from the issue you already know about, vs. the one you're trying to solve.
X2 on the maintenance................I don't know why people think they can do nothing as far as maintenance to these old trucks for years, let them sit for months to years on end, then expect to climb in them, fire them up and have them run like a new Ferrari............not trying to beat you up, but it just don't work that way............yeah, they will probably still run; but things deteriorate over time.........
Like I said, I wasn't trying to beat you up...............and I DO understand lack of funding.......I'd just start at it a piece at a time as you can afford it and start ironing out the issues you KNOW it has..........fire it up once a week to keep things from deteriorating to the point you have to start over, get some fresh gas in it then use some STABIL in the gas if its going to be sitting, and keep at it, you'll get it sooner or later.....
