Truck is a 98 and has a bad cat. What size is the exhaust pipe? Is there a cat delete pipe available or a cheap way to delete the kitty other than just cutting it and straight pipe? Mileage and power has gone in the toilet and money for a new cat is a few months away while gas is shooting toward $4 or more per gallon.
Any advice is welcome. Son-in-laws truck so I'm just getting info second hand thru my daughter.
Any performance issues with a CEL that would be worse than a bad cat? Is it a rear )2 sensor that throws the light? Is there a resistor that can be plugged into the sensor to fool the PCM?
Like I said, just looking for a short term fix until they can afford a new cat. A CEL for a couple of months doesn't sound too bad if his MPG's improve.
Short term fix, fix the problem that made your cat fail. The cat didn't fail by itself, get the car totally tuned up and them proceed with the cat if needed.
Since fuel economy is obviously the important factor here, why not park the Ranger and get something that actually gets good gas mileage, you can make a car payment for what an V6 Ranger costs in gas each month even when properly tuned. You drive Rangers when you need a larger more spacious vehicle for things like hauling and towing. When you don't need either of those things, it saves money in the long run to get something more practical.
Son in law needs to take truck to advance or autozone to get a free scan for the trouble code. That needs to be done first to help troubleshoot the cause of the cat failure and so that performance issues can be addressed.
Thanks for the tips guys. Supposedly he's already done the tune up. I've seen a cat just fail with no other cause. Usually it's in the 5 or 7 yr warranty period for the cat so we may or may not have other issues to deal with. So if he doesn't want me to scan it, I'll tell them to make a trip to autozoo.
As for mileage, I was under the impression the Ranger would get decent mileage? I also assumed it had a 4 cyl under the hood. Buying another vehicle is not an option. They just got a house and their credit is maxed out, but they got a house.
