Drive for mileage

Here’s the photo of the LOM (lie o meter25.8 mpg) it helps to draft a semi trailer with a 20 mph tail wind. This was a great feeling – This fuel mileage test was right after the latest recall flash; BP fuel – no bio - $4.04 per gallon – total miles driven were 307.6 - of which 189 were interstate and 118.6 in-town. Hand calculated mileage for the total tank was 15.17 mpg. Truck is stock – 08 F250 with 3:73. Given the power and weight of this truck – I’m satisfied – as much as I can be – until tune & delete<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Running 70 and empty I can get about 17 or just over 400 miles on 23 gallons not drafting either.

I find that my best empty mpgs are after hard towing events.

bummer, this continues to confirm that the LOM uses the pedal angle for calculating fuel usage.. (which is why its SO messed up with the tuners!)..

Remember that the 25.8 was for the perior of time that I was draftng that semi - Strickly interstate driving I have reache 19 mpg - but I drive for mileage - around 62 to 64 MPH - there are many times I'll slow down rather than pass.

I once drafted behind a guy and noted a couple of lbs less boost was needed.

Steady state boost is lower with the new flash too. I used to run between 8 and 12psi on flat freeway. Now it sits between 5 and 8psi

Trust me, Sam...pedal angle isn't involved in this. Fuel usage for a certain pedal position can vary widely depending on what the truck is trying to do. A certain pedal position coming off of idle will burn much less fuel than that same pedal position at 2,000 RPMs on the highway.

The PCM calculates fuel usage as GPH, and this calculation is based off of injection timing and RPMs with the stock tune. I'm not sure which software mechanism Spartan uses to change engine behavior, and I probably wouldn't understand it if I did know. But I'm pretty confident that their tuning changes things in a manner that the PCM doesn't know the correct amount of fuel going through the sticks. For example, if you increase fuel rail pressure and keep the injection pulse timing the same fuel usage will go up...will the PCM know that?

What you calculated makes sense to me. Just curious; what are you towing and what are you calculating for fuel usage?

When towing my 5er I am usually in stock settings because it is so heavy. I get around 7-9 depending. Keep in mind that it is 13'6" to the AC unit. A big sail. I am usually around 22K GCWVR.

I can get in the 11's with flatbeds.

I calculate based upon fillup to fillup. I fillup till I see the fuel in the neck. I use my trip a to keep track of it.

Thanks; you are calculating properly instead of relying on the "lie o meter" and that provides proper information. Confirms my suspicions. Diesels are great for towing and heavy duty hauling but one should not buy one thinking its a money maker at the pump, IMO. Takes a long time to make up for the increased price of fuel, maintenance and additional cost for the engine.

No doubt about it; you have exactly what you need to tow those large trailers and its a wonderful truck inside as well. Good choice and great truck. Congrats.
