6.0 2005 350 PSD start off bogging lack of power

Hello all,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
I am having an issue upon starting off (cold) The temp in NJ has been in the 70's. Here is the issue....I start the truck no issue....wait a minute or two...when I am in drive it hesitates like it is choked up. If I nail it...the truck will accelerate, but not as well driving after five minutes. It is like it is missing or something like that.<o></o>
<o></o>
Any ideas?<o></o>
<o></o>
I have had the fuel sending unit (fuel tank) replaced. Fuel line filters were replaced about 8mo ago.<o></o>
<o></o>
I do not put a great deal of miles on this truck, but it is driven each day. 8-10 miles a day. Once a week out on the highway.<o></o>
<o></o>
Any help would be a big help.<o></o>
<o></o>

Clarification: Missing cold and runs better after 5 minutes of driving? I'd say it's suffering from a little injector stiction.

Question: What kind of oil, weight, and how often do you change it?

Does it run Ok after it warms up? It's probably better to take it easy on the engine until it starts to warm up. That's not to say not to drive it cold, because 6.0 psd's shouldn't be idled long anyway. Only that you should't nail it until warmed. If it's stumbling bad though, you might be looking at an injector problem. Maybe injector cleaner would help some. As it gets colder you should switch to a lighter oil for the winter, 10w30 for diesels (CJ4) or synthetics work well.

Same problem here (also in NJ). It seems to be getting worst also. I think its an injector problem. is there any injector cleaner I can use or are they not recommended?

Mine was doing the same once it got colder here, thought it was an injector. Mine would flutter when it was cold, then drive fine when warm. Took it to dealer and they flashed the computer, and it stopped. I guess there is an update.

I would also use a diesel additive. I was against it and tried it on the last two tanks. I am now a believer. I was getting sputtering while pushing a hard load but not anymore. I used diesel kleen from warmart, but there are tons of them out there.

I had the same prob with my wifes excursion...just didn't want to go. Took it in to the dealership and they replaced the FICM under warranty. After getting it home, I replaced the Fuel Filter (they were pretty dirty) and it runs like a champ. It has 95K on it, I bought it used at 75K, and besides oil changes I didn't do anything to it. I runs better now than when I bought it. I guess it needed some TLC.

I'm a big believer in the "once of prevention" theory. I use two products from Red line. One is an injector cleaner and cetane booster. The other is a fuel stabilizer, also has fuel system tratment in it. I throw a bottle of one or the other in about every 4th tank or so. I'm also pretty diligent about changing the fuel filters about twice a year. The 6.0s are pretty finicky about maintenance. The last thing is that oil has to be a lighter grade when it gets colder.

Yes and Yes.....

She does get better after 5 minutes upon driving. As for the oil, it is changed by Ford every 6K. What they use...I would have to check.

I think I am going to try some injector cleaner.....any suggestions?

Thanks for the responses all!

Have the dealer run the computer update. Fixed mine. And I have started using diesel kleen from walmart. There are a lot of others, but this has cleared my stuff up.

Like I said earlier I had the same exact thing going on in my '04 Excursion. So I took it to the dealer yesterday and had them do a flash update and now it runs like a champ even when cold. Do you have a heat inductive flash update? If not I'd try this first, only $104 at my dealer.

As stated, I had the Ind. Heat flash done, and switched to 5-40 Rotella syn and it runs MUCH better. Ford more than likely uses Motorcraft 15-40. After I got my truck back from Ford when the HPOP was replaced, it ran like you stated when cold- CRAPPY! I ran the 15-40 for @2500 miles until I couldn't take it anymore and switched it back to 5-40 syn, night and day difference. My truck prefers syn. I run B10 and DK year-round, and haven't had any issues, never even a WIF light, but I get my fuel from the same place every time. Curious as to why you don't change your own oil, maybe do the next yourself and get UOA on the Motorcraft at the 6k, see how its doing. Its pretty easy, get yourself a Fumoto valve and install it while doing the OC to make the next one that much easier. HTH- Tim

Well it is off to my 8:15am appointment with FORD. I am going to get flashed with the latest code. I hope this does the trick.

questison....how long does injectors last? Ballpark....I know it depends on how you maintain your truck, but under normal use/maintenece....what would be a good time frame.

I took the truck to Ford today and they flased it for me. Said my previous code was outdated. Nice...thought I was good to go. Nope....I still have the bogging upon starting off....only for about four minutes or so it lasts. No power what so ever.

Here is what was done over the last few weeks.

Oil change 4-50 Rotella and filter
New Code flash (today)
Red Line injector cleaner added in case of a gummed up injector 1bottle 30 gallons of fuel.

History.... I have had the fuel sending unit replaced 7 monts ago. New icp...new turbo mount (dont know exactly what the f it was)

I am stuck....the fuel filters were replaced 6k ago.

Any ideas?

I am still under warranty till July 2010.

No check engine light....so I don't think it is throwing codes. (I could be wrong)

Any help would be a big help......thanks

If you're still under warranty, USE IT! Make them keep it until its fixed to your satisfaction. If they can't fix it take it to another dealer or get the regional service engineer involved.
