The Dodge is a Gen III. There are 3 different 3.9's and this one is a magnum. It doesn't use an EGR system and they generally eat gas. They are considered marginal power for their displacement. They require quite a bit of maintenance- tune-ups every 35,000, axle fluid changes every 30,000, tranny at 35,000. The front ends have weak ball joints and the brakes are weak. The GMC I don't know about.

the first two numbers If correct with the manual are really just sugested. I have 130k on my 94 dodge but it is a 2500. never changed the diff fluid. as to the last number that is an opinion. It is true the the auto is weaker than the 5spd, but in stock HP form they will still last. I have 2 autos a 95 1ton V8 that we pull a 770 JD backhoe with 56k on it. my 93 auto pulls our 35' citation 5th wheel camper. 175k on that truck.
Don't know about the MPG question because I have not owned one.

dman, not trying to get under your skin or start an arguement but why not change the rear diff fluid? It costs less than 15 bucks. Just wondering. Most dodge diffs have that fancy rubber plug in them too if you want to use the "suck it out" method. After all it is what lubricates the axle bearings.

I'm too busy most of the time to do that kinda stuff. I know it will bite me in the end but so far so good. The truck gets the oil changed when I get time which has been anywhere from 3k to 10k miles. It is on its second fuel filter and I had the oil in the tranny changed when I changed the clutch. I hope to change the diff fluid this year maybe. just depends on how many days it rains. thats the only time I can slow down. Can't plow the feilds or cut hay then. Most time when it rains we have graves to dig. this is all after school is out or after I get home from my 12hr shifts at the powerplant. 6AM-6PM really bites.
