i have a late 70's 351w engine..i am wanting to install a roller cam ..i was wanting to know if i could use a the roller cam hardware from a late model 5.0 to go in mine..the other question would i have to get the block machine for the spider bar..or do they sell any self tapping nuts ..i know that crane sell retro kits like this but it is extremely high price..trying to get the most cost effective way..thanks
well, I am pretty sure you will have to have it machined...Also, one more thing I am not sure about is the lifter bores. I always thought they were longer on the roller block 351's because of the added lenght of the roller lifters. I don't know if this presents a problem or not. good thing to check into though. Go through the archives, I am almost sure this has been talked about before but I can't remember when.
the block has to be drilled and tapped for the spyer to be bolted in. lifter bores are fine, the use of hardened special length pushrods take care of that.
other than that its normal engine building.
Dude make sure you use a reduced base circle cam with the non roller block. The bores and lifters are longer on roller blocks. Due to the longer roller lifter, when it bottoms out it doesn't get enough oil if used with a regular 5.0. high output or 351 Windsor cam. That's why the kit is expensive.
Check the Crane cam catalogue. They make a set of roller lifters which have a lowered oil groove that will match the height in the block. They drop in and no machining or other parts are needed. This allows the use of off the shelf roller cams designed for the 5.0.
