Ever since i did the 5-speed swap a couple months ago my truck seems to "roll coal" through every gear. It is not just a little black smoke, yesterday i had a hybrid riding my a** so i grabbed a higher gear and put it to the floor. I wish i had a video camera because that thing almost disappeared and they came to an almost complete stop. I do understand that if you get a higher gear and lug it, it will smoke quite heavily. However it is anytime that i push the throttle it even if i am 2000rpm and just accelerating alittle. the only time it doesn't smoke is when you are just mantaining speed. I am guessing that the PO had turned the pump up. I have never messed with it but from what i read it looks to be pretty easy. I am just curious how do i know where factory setting were and how do i tell if it has been turned up. Also is there something else that would be causing all this smoke.
You could tell the pump has been turned up if its doing what its doing to you. I have no doubt somebody messed with the fuel screw, you know how to adjust it??
yes i do, i just don't know where factory settings would be. with the cost of fuel i don't really like watching my money smoke out the tail pipe. the only reason i was not sure it was the pump is because everything i read said it would increase EGT's a lot. I pulled 10,000lbs the other day up a couple good hills in 5th gear at 65mph and never went above 900 degrees.
Did you check you air intake, air filter?? If thats blocked up that will sure cause some smoke. Also, did you ever mess with the torque screw? Does the black smoke stop after 1500 rpms??
Dirty air filter will cause smoke also, restrictions in the air intake path, or even F250HDXLT mentioned he was rolling a lot of coal when his cowl induction intake tube collapsed.
But if you have that much smoke, then the fuel has definetly been turned up.
Mine's bone stock and will smoke some light grey when i take off running thru the gears.
When I mash it, I can get some dark grey/almost black smoke and can make a cloud two lanes wide. Still light enough to see thru, so it doesn't effect the ability for drivers following me to see.
I have never touched any part of the motor except changing the glow plugs to beru's. the air filter is clean and is a K&N. The torque screw? it will still smoke after 1500. it stops about 2000-2100

Someone has messed with your torque screw then. There is a video on youtube that explains how to adjust it. Basically it a long stud and you remove it and thread the jam nut up higher on the stud. Then screw it back into the IP. Start by threading the jam nut up 1 complete revolution. There are two screws located on the IP in the back and should have a plastic caps on them. The torque screw is the one that is higher up.

To increase fuel, you shorten the stud by threading the jam nut down. To decrease fuel, thread the jam nut up so that the stud going into the IP is longer. A picture of you torque screw would tell me alot about where it is(increased or decreased).
I will get a pic but it might be a couple days, we are in the middle of a winter storm watch with an expected 10-20 inches new snow by tomorrow night, so far since about midnight we have already gotten six. I will also try to get a video of how much smoke is being made.
There should only be 1 thread showing on the top of the torque screw if it has never been touched, If yours has been messed with, 2-3 threads are probably showing on the top.

I know nothing about this fancy torque screw, sounds like Snapon's gotcha covered
But with a K&N, you should be flowing a bunch more air than the stock filter...so I'm really surprised about amount of smoke...
And are you aware of the debate on the K&N filters?
The holes in the filter are larger to allow more air to pass thru, which gives you the performance upgrade....but having bigger holes means larger debris can make it's way thru also...
It's more of an issue if you're running in dusty areas...it's a big debate in the Jeep world wh
I put a K&N on my '65 352 FE, it REALLY woke the engine up. Just keep the oil on the filter to catch the junk and keep it cleaned
Yeah, some guys(like wreck) don't like K&N filters. I am one who really doesn't care, I ran one in my IDI before I turbo'd it with no problems. Some say it let's too much through though and I guess the debate will never end. Like oval said though, I wouldn't run one if you are constanly in dusty conditions. Right now I'm just running the banks filter that came with the turbo kit, the guy at banks told me it's really just a K&N filter. Just keep the K&N filters oiled and they will keep the junk out.
