Ok so I've searched and searched and searched about 3 or 4 forums including this one and I can't fine any info on subwoofer installation for a 78 f150 reg cab. I have a 500 watt rms amp so I'm looking for a shallow mount sub of comparable ratings also how can I fit one in the truck?
I have a 800W pioneer mono block amp 250RMS with exact matching spec kicker 12" shallow sub behind my single bench seat. Really tight squeeze with not much space. Thank goodness my amp is small in size otherwise it wouldnt all fit. As for install, i found a helpful step by step guide on e-how or similar site and follwed that which worked out perfect. I also has to buy a 1000W amp kit and cut the wires to fit.
the shallow mount subs kinda suck. I have an old school rockford fosgate punch DVC 8" in a sealed box and it hits very hard and very deep. it doesn't take much to get loud in a regular cab... there isn't much air to compress.
Ive got 2 kicker 10" shallow mounts and they hit HARD. maybe not quite as deep as subs in bigger boxes but it rattles the hell out of the cab when I crank it up. I've heard the new rockford shallow mounts are the best though... Oh i have an amp, 2 subs in separate boxes, and 2 6x9 in boxes behind my seat in a regular cab. tight but fits...
I have 1 10" Alpine Type S sub in my truck. Running on an old school PPI amp and it hits pretty good. I also have a Sony 4 channel amp running the 6 1/2 and tweeters in the doors. Need to put my 6X9's back in too, but just haven't taken the time.
Your options are only limited by your imagionation. You don't have to settle for a shallow sub if you don't mind sacrificing some legroom or rear floor storage space. I have a 1.5cuft ported box behind my seat, with a 10in CV Vega series. I went with a ported box to give more boom using less power. The port faces up and the sub box front is angled to match the contour of the seat back. My amp is mounted under the middle seat section and bolted to the floor. I love my setup and sound. I did have to give up being able to scoot my bench the last inch or so to the rear. But I'm 6ft 1in and have no problems getting in or out of my pickup. You can see some pics of my install in my gallery.
It all fit with the seatt all the way forward. All the audio equipment is gone though, so I couldn't give you the dimensions/plans for the sub enclosure. Came out to about 1.2 cubic feet per sub sealed if i remember right.
The pioneer "ibflat" series sounds really good. I've installed a many of them. It all depends on what sound you want out of it.
There are some pre-fab boxes that will fit behind the seat. With the amp you have you are limited to a regular or basic subwoofer. The regular TSSW251 pioneer will work at 250rms @ 4ohms.
What ohm rating is the 250rms on your amp? 2 or 4 and bridged or mono?

i have a pioneer 760w amp mounted to the bk fo my cab on the driver side w a mtx trk box it has 2 mtx terminator x 10s in it but likme everyone else when i crank it up it beats the crap out of my cab (needs about 3 good layers of dynamat lol) so go w whatever u think will sound good in there
For some reason I was thinking I read your amp was 250rms not 500rms.
Now, it cannot run 500rms each side on a mono. A mono only has one output. Mono meaning one.
You might have a two channel but I doubt it's 500rms each.
What's the brand and model number of the amp?
Good amp. Make sure you use 4ga wire and have a good ground or it will go bad.
The 9104 runs 900rms @ 2ohms, 500rms @ 4 ohms. It is one ohm stable but it will go into protect depending on how hard you run it.
You can run two of the heavier pioneer flats with that amp, TSSW3001S4.
Whatever you go with, make sure it's either single 4ohm voice coil each or dual 2ohm voice coil.
If you decide to go with only one sub, you can use a single 2ohm, or dual 4ohm on the heavier subs.
Check the rms ratings on the subwoofer before you buy it and don't buy cheap crap no matter what anybody tells you. It's still cheap crap.
