hmmm....I been looking at a few f-450s and now have to add this to my list of things to check.

I presently have an f-350 dually and insurance was not a problem, but both my 250 and 350 had to be registered using an exception to get pass plates. Hard to say you dont need commercial policy if you have commercial plates.

I've had Nationwide for years and had no problem insuring my 08 F-450. In fact this is the first I've ever hear of such thing! I hope this helps....

I just called GEICO on a 2010 f-450 dually, and the cost is only 73 more every 6 months than what I am paying for my f-350 dually.

so the 450 with pas plates and non commercial use is not a problem in NY.

usaa does not insure f350 or f450 anymore. they will grandfather you in if you all ready have insurance. they will send you over to progressive for a commercial rate.

The law seems to vary between the states. Lately in CA all trucks over 10,000 lb GVW, or even lighter flatbeds are consider commercial no matter 450 or 250.
Seems the laws existed for years, but it is now when cash starving Police is seeking each extra dollar they can squeeze from citizens.
No police agency gets any money from DOT\MVD weight registration fees. All that money goes to highway funds.

I have Geico and same deal on E450 cutaway. They said a big No on commercial vehicles. Said well you insure motorhomes on the same chassis. Didn't matter. Looking for insurance as well. Live in SC and our insurance are 6 month policies and are as much or more than year policies in other states. I remember when they went to 6 months from a year. Price stayed the same or went up. Said they were losing money on year policies. Yeah right! Also said there would be a reduction in rates going to six months. Yeah, right again. We have some of the highest insurance rates in the country. Any insurance agents on here from SC?

I lived in MB for 13 years and I can tell ya that SC is the land of crazy taxes and fees. Ridiculous! Seemed like every time I took a shower, I was paying somebody for something.

Lived there for 9 myself. Insurance there is the highest in the state. Dropped $100 per six months when I moved back to York County.

Just bought a 2010 F-450 DRW. I was able to get insurance AND was able to get it financed which a lot of banks wont do on an f-450. I was also able to get passenger plates. I passed the NYMA DEMA emissions test (it was originally a canadian truck) so yes it can be done.

Good in theory, until you have a claim. Then it gives them an out not to pay up because of the deceit.

Upgrade from a 2011 F250 to a 2016 F450.. Insurance went up $37per month and had no problems getting State farm to transfer the policy.

its not a deceit in my case....I do have passenger plates and it is a recreational vehicle. in NYS if you put a camper top on a truck over 5500lbs you qualify for passenger plates and can drive on parkways and park in residentual areas.

N.C. isn't F-450 friendly at all. Rates are based on the VIN and anything above an F350 must be insured commercially. My '99 was more than 2 Excursions, F-250, travel trailer and a boat(all full coverage). It was a hoss of a truck though and fun to drive.
