help on my F250 2x4 to 4x4 conversion
im looking into converting my 01 2x4 f250 into a 4x4. i kno i need the front axle, leaf spring, transfer case, fron and rear drive shafts, and the linkage and break components for the axle. what else am i missing? can i use the 4r100 transmission and just change the output shaft or do i need a new tranny? is this worth doing or just buying a new truck? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Most people will say to sell your truck and buy a 4X4 one.If you could find a donor truck that probably be your best bet instead of buying the parts seperately.I'm not sure if your truck would have the wiring for the shift on the fly and the 4X4 lights on the dash.If it does you will need a switch for it on the dash. You would also need to hook up the vacuum for the hubs. You could use a manual shift transfer case and manual lockout hubs if don't have all the wiring for the electronic shift on the fly.

If your able to get a donor truck for cheap I'd do the conversion. If your anything like me I have a lot more time than money. You have to make sure the donor front axle is the same gear ratio as your rear axle.I think everything should bolt up except I'm not sure about the tranny to transfer case boltiing together. You will atleast have to change the tailshaft,if not the whole tranny.

Changing the tail shaft is not trivial, if it can even be done. Worst case is a donor transmission that is already mated to a transfer case. Your donor truck will need the same wheel base as your truck, or the rear drive shaft won't fit. There are one, two and three piece drive shafts, depending on the wheel base, transmission and transfer case options. You'll have to pick the right one. You'll have to eliminate the transmission cross member and replace it with the transfer case cross member. If you go from a 1 or 2 piece drive shaft to a 2 or 3 piece drive shaft you'll have to add cross members for the carriers.
On the front, you'll need the entire axle assembly, including ball joints, all the axle parts and the correct brakes. You'll probably also need most if not all the steering components from the steering gear box on down. The springs, spring shackles, etc and the track bar and stabilizer bar, if you want one.
