I purchased a 92 Ranger XLT (regular cab) and the previous owner cut the factory wiring harness leaving bare wires in the dash. I am attempting to find out what wires correspond to which on a different radio system.
I do have one radio working but when I turn on the headlights the radio dies (the display goes dark but does not lose the time)
I attempted to install a radio from a 94 ranger but the adapters wiring from that radio to mine do not correspond.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found this discussion in the archives when I was trying to figure out the wiring for the radio in my aerostar. They might be the same as the one in your ranger.
Here's the link:

Hopefully that will help.

Try this thread:
Wiring Diagrams
Look about half way down. There is a pic of the wires and plugs. If your wires are the same color - there is the list. If they are different colors, let me know and I can try to match the wires up for you.

when I plug in the speakers plug (black adapter) heard "sound" like speakers being powered. I then plugged in the black, the tape deck attempts to kick in - but nothing.
This entire time there is no display at all. 15 amp fuse is good (replaced MANY times )
I was going to try a radio from an 89 mecury topaz figuring lincoln ford mecury - but if I can get the ranger one running (Had great sounds) I'd prefer that one.
Thanks again cobraxp

Thanks for the info tempe, however the "factory" wires that the installdoctor site shows doesn't match my Ranger.
It says a purple wire for the left + speaker, I have no purple wires in my dash. Nor any blue wires. Granted the site does give the "disclaimer" that ford changes wire colors even on identical years and models.
I do greatly appreciate the help though.
Oh BTW the first link in your posting
http://://www.partsexpress.com/pe/ps...number=265-653 results in a 404 error
you just need to remove the extra :// from the post before the www
I'm gonna get this truck a radio yet without having to pay someone else to do it : P

I posted that PDF document trusting that the information is valid. I have had a few complaints about it, so I'm thinking of taking it down. I have been having problems since the beginning of that tutorial w/ partsexpress.com links. For the meantime, you can copy that six-digit part number from the bad url and simply paste it into their website and it will bring up the correct page.

Ok I give up on the factory wiring
I reinstall the cheepy radio (boy can you tell) (2x 25w) I at least now have tunes.
The main problem installing it was the acc/run power that should be coming from the engine, supposed red wire, mine is black with a green stripe has no power through it. This is with the engine off, on, or in acc. I went and bought a digital multimeter thinking my cheapo multi wasn't functioning properly - but same results.
Anywy the only way I could get this to install was to run the radio's power to the always hot line the radio memory wire was connected. I just have to remember to shut the radio off when I get out of the truck.
I'd love to be able to hook the original wiring up but I realized I don't even know what the original radio/wiring was (premium/non-premium sound)
anybody happen to know what came standard in a 92 ranger XLT regular cab truck? Or any idea how to find out what came installed in this truck?
Thanks for all the great help/advice/and links.
