Well, december 31st we took delivery of our brand new 2011 F550 brush/utility unit. As you can see below hse's got 4 doors, is a 4x4, and many options added which was NOT an easy task finding. The rear of the unit is all Poly aka plastic and so far has been an awesome choice but time will tell. This unit is replacing our 1970 F250 sport custom which was bought brand new and rolled 7000 miles by end of the summer 2010 On with the pics and further story telling...
Control center for the lights and such is all controlled thru a "multiplex" system which is computer based so any chenages we want just plug it in and go. touch screen eliminates all those pesky rocker switches.
all we can say is...were not working on it! good lord thats 35 lbs of crap stuffed into a 3 lb box! were not real impressed with the "take off" of this 6.7 but once things go its ok, just doesnt seem to have the giddy up it should.
some things that also didnt impress us during the spec portion of this was the fact we were told that since ford isnt "mass" producing the 550's they are by order only and here is the list of options avalible for them that, we should have been able to put things on that we wanted! we went with the "XL" package because we wanted vinal seats and flooring manual windows and door locks and steel wheels. we however wanted a chrome grill and power mirrors but NnnnnNOOOOOOOoooo cant do that gotta go with the XLT package sooooo wtf is our next comment, if they are by order only then why cant the person who is forking out 45,000 get a chrome grill!!!! you should be able to get anything you want off that options list!
Ohhh yea we ordered shift on the fly push button 4x4 but again cant get that with the XL package so ended up with the lever which ends up being a better choice anyways but, we were trying to make it retard proof. the brush guard, yet another nightmare to find...after extensive searching a billion phone calls we finally found a company who was building them although were on backorder at the time, it is a Aries polished stainless with wrap around guards.
here is the truck it replaced, Our pride and joy a 1970 ford f250 sport custom, truck was bought new in 1970 and has gone thru many changes over its lifetime but, concerned with safety of the aging truck and the equipment it carried, plus with things changing in the FD service this unit just wasnt able to perfom the job anymore.

Beautiful truck!! How many miles do you guys plan on putting on the truck in a year?? Maybe a gasser would've been a better option?
well, thats kinda a hard question to answer really. The old truck it replaced only has just over 7000 miles on it, now this one will be taking on more "job tasks" then the old so we will be putting more miles on it then the old. This will make our entire fleet now all diesel so there "shouldnt" be any mix ups with putting in the wrong fuel. We also will be towing a 16' enclosed trailer which hauls our Kubota RTV900 so we needed little more pullin power then the gas motors were giving.
