Hello,
Went to garage yesterday to put my summer tires back on after a long winter, mechanic showed me that the oem tires are pretty banged up after only one summer use ( about 15 000 km)
Winter use is of no concern, up here in Quebec, dedicated winter tires are a must, so i have that already covered.
In summer, most of the driving is on paved roads, but with fishing and hunting, i do have to ride maybe 1000 kms on really bad dirt and gravel roads wich are often muddy and logging trails wich are rocky at times.
Thread life is not primordial.
Quitness for pavement is
And puncture resistance is also.
Looking at the :
Nittos Terra grapplers
Falken Wildpeak A/T
Yokohama geolander A/T S
Cooper discoverer A/T 3
The only ones i have tried are the Yokohamas that i had on a 2006 Explorer, were great on paved roads, but a bit slippery on loose gravel, had to put the truck on full time 4x4 when driving over 40 mph on gravel.
So far, i'm leaning towards Falken, admitedly only based on the look of the tire...hehehe.
Any of you guys have ever driven these tires under the same conditions i'll be using them?
Also, have i left out any other model that you have liked?
Thanks in advane
Rick
p.s. oh and i forgot, tires need adequate load capacity, plannong on loading bed next fall with 2 moose!
I'm a huge Michelin fan, but I fear that they might not be as aggressive as you are looking for.
Here are their two offerings:
LTX M/S2 - great all season tire. Amazingly quiet on road. Can handle a little light to moderate off road use.
LTX AT2 - would be the more aggressive of the two. Comes standard on the 20" SuperDuty's. Great all around tire.
Aside from that, the BF Goodrich AT is always a popular choice.
The Toyo Open Country AT is also another option. Toyo and Nitto are sister companies.
I always got great service from the Goodyear Wrangler A/T but they are spendy as hell.
That's the first thing I'll be looking at when I get my truck is tire replacement as the OE tires typically suck. I've also been really happy with Yoko H/T's on my Expy. I may try the A/T's on my new one.
I am a big fan of the BF Goodrich TA's. I used them for 15 years on an Explorer, F-150 and F-250. On 95% highway driving I always get at least 70K out of a set. I do a lot of winter driving on I-80 in the Rockies and Sierra in the winter (ice and snow packed surface) plus some gravel roads in Iowa and dirt and rock roads in Nevada and Arizona. I have never had a flat or any problems with traction. Plus to me they look great. When I pick up my new F-150 in a couple months I'll go straight to my tire man for a set of 305 BFG's.
I am very fond of my goodyear duratrac's. They do everything well and are reasonably quiet on pavement. They dig hard in the dirt and gravel. The only issue that I have had with them is they are kind of spendy. Of course I got carried away and put e load rated tires on my ranger. oops...
have you looked at the nitto trail grappler. not as aggresive as the mud grappler but still do well offroad. search youtube for different tire test videos. there are tons
I'd take a look at the Kumho Road Venture AT's. I had them on my '05 F150 Screw for several reasons.
1- You don't need 10 ply tires on a 1/2 ton pickup unless you just like a rough ride. 6 ply's will carry all you need but you can't find hardly any much less a decent selection of sizes. The Kumho's are 8 ply- load range D. Check out the weight differences between all the ones mentioned. Rolling weight eats up your gas mileage.
2-The ride is quiet and they do fairly well in mud and really good in sand/gravel.
3- Tirerackdotcom has them for WAY less than any of the others.
I really liked mine and will probably put them on the 2010 when the GoodYear's wear out. Plus...they balanced better than any set of tires I've EVER put on and I've installed literally thousands of tires in my life. I had one that actually took no weight when I spun it on the balancer and another that only took 1/2 ounce. Thats unheard of in tires of this size and tread design.

Yeah, those duratrac look nice, price seems reasonable.... the Falken are just a tad cheaper...
If you drive on a lot of sharp rocks there aren't any tires that I know of that will not get beat up. Take a look around you at tires on other trucks and see what they are using.
What's most important is the sidewall protection and using tires with enough plys to protect from puncture.
Some find the BFGs noisy. Make sure you are ok with their whine before you buy them.
My fav is the Toyo Open Country A/T. However if you want to be more aggressive, I hear really good things of late about the GY Duratracs and the Nitto Trail grapplers. Both very aggresive without being loud. Thats win/win.
I'd pick the Toyos over the Terra grapplers myself. Last longer. Same for Bridgestone Revos. Great tire, but I've found Toyo will last longer.
I love the hankook dynapros quiet as ATs great traction and last longer than any MT AT or car tire that I have oned.
My 06 f350 had nitto terra grapplers on it when I bought it with 75% tread THE WORST TIRE I HAVE EVER DRIVEN no traction safer to drive my mustang in the snow with summer tires!!!

I have Terra Grapplers on my truck and had zero issues driving this winter, and we had plenty of snow. Seems reviews are hit or miss with these, I have around 9k on mine and they still look new. These are my first Nittos, so I'm not sure yet if I would buy another set. I'm waiting to see how long they actually do hold up. I thought about Hankook AT/M and BFG AT/KO, but I had my mind set on my 295/70-18 and no one else had that size.
EDIT : Welcome to FTE!

X2 I've had good luck with Terra Grapplers as well.Mine were as good in the snow as any other A/T I've ever run.Everyone I know that had them has gotten at least 45k miles out of them.
