OK guys, after balancing all 6 wheels, replacing the front 2, a front end alignment, and rebuilding & balancing the driveshaft, the dually still has it's shimmy and vibration. It feels like it's right under my seat. There's no vibration coming from the steering wheel so I'm starting to rule out the front-end being the cause. I'll be putting new shocks in this weekend but I don't think those will solve the problem. anyone wanna take a crack at this???
Also my check engine light comes on whenever I'm coming off the highway and the trucks starting to slow down. I'm open to suggestions about this too...
Thanks!!
Jay
Although not likely, it could be that one of your wheels (or even tires) could be out-of-round. You said that you replaced the front two tires, and you can't feel anything thru the steering wheel, so I agree that it is probably no in the front end. The rear tires could maybe have a flat spot, seperated belts/plies, etc... Did the truck sit for an extended period? More than likely if your tires or wheels were out-of-round, it would have been noticed in the balancing process, but it may have somehow been overlooked. It's kind of a shot in the dark, but it's an idea.
Guy's, thank you very much for the replys!!! As I stated in my first post the driveshaft was rebuilt (new u-joints,hanger bearing, balance,ect...)I'm not sure if the truck sat but my guess would be no. When I bought it the front tires were almost new and the backs look even newer. I did however have a bad front tire that made the truck pull even after an alignment. I just spent $300.00 on new front tires and am hoping to god I don't have to spend another $600.00 on 4 rears. I was thinking it might be something to do with the tranny too. The truck feels very "loose" though if that makes any sence. Like it sways side to side when hitting bumps. The vibration is most noticeable around 70 mph.
Thanks again all!!!
That's in the balance of the tires, most tire shop's balancing machines only spin the tire at 25mph or so. They can only balance to 55mph, and somethimes they still aren't right. The "loose" feeling is the guy that aligned it set it to factory specs, take it back and tell him to add some camber to it, should take care of it. Make him drive and feel whats going on, if you have to go with him and drive it yourself 'til he gets it right.
See if your local Ford shop has a road force balancer. I had 4 different shops tell me my tires were fine but I still had a bad vibration. I had the dealer do a road force balance and they found two tires slightly out of round. They broke the tires off the rim and spun the tire 180 degrees and rebalanced them. It drives nice and smooth now. Just a thought. Best of luck with it..
