Losing oil, where's it going? 99 V10 4x4 SD

I'm going through at the least 3 quarts of oil a month now. No leaks, no oil spots on the ground where I park, doesn't smoke a bit, and no antifreeze in the oil. Anyone else have this problem with a their V10?

A functioning catalytic converter will hide some oil consumption. Do not rule out you are burning oil

You can't tell if you have coolant in your oil by looking at it. A more reliable test is to put a drop of oil on a hot exhaust manifold and listen. If it sizzles, there is coolant. Also, an emissions tester sniffing for combustion byproduct in the radiator is another reliable test.

Lastly, when is the last time the PCV valve was replaced?

Check your PCV valve. See if there is oil in the pipe as well. You'd be surprised how much oil can get sucked up a malfuntioning PCV Valve. My experience has been best using Motorcraft replacement PCV valves. Aftermarket tend to fail too soon.

You could try replacing the pcv valve. What oil (type and weight) and oil filter are you using? Also how many miles do you put on in 1 month? Could send an oil sample off to Blackstone for a UOA which will tell you if there is a ny coolant, excess carbon, fuel and etc in the oil.

I bought the truck a little over a year ago and from the things I had to replace and go over I highly doubt it's ever been replaced. I put new plugs in a couple months back and the plugs were still factory plugs from 99.

I also noticed I'm getting more condensation from the exhaust and it's more a carbon color condensation now.

There is some oil in PVC valve as well as some sucked up in the tube

I've been using Rotella 5W-30 but now that I'm looking it shows I should be using a 5W-20 weight oil. I've always used FRAM oil filters, In a month it all depends on how much traveling I'm doing as far as miles. Anywhere from 300 to 500 miles every week and a half two weeks sometimes more.

I was thinking maybe burnt piston rings and it was blowing by, I'm not really sure at this point.

I was just out looking over some things, I have oil sucked up in the PCV valve and I also has two vacuum lines off that I'm not sure what they went to.

While I'm on a posting roll, would any of this have anything to do with only getting 7MPG?!

I see your located about 35minutes from me.

The 5w-30 Rotella is fine. Your 99' originally speced 5w-30. As for the Fram oil filter they are junk, especially the cheapo orange filters which do not have the silicone anti-drainback valve the modular motors (4.6l, 5.4l and 6.8l) require. Use a Motorcraft Fl-820S oil filter, it is the proper filter with the silicone valve and only costs like 20 cents more at wally world than the cheapo orange Fram. If you are getting blowby a UOA and/or a leakdown test would confirm.

Sounds like your PCV valve needs replaced. Get a Motorcraft replacement PCV from a Ford dealer online. Inspect the hose going from the PCV valve to engine and make sure it is in good shape. Also inspect all hoses hooked up to the intake for any cracks.

Post a picture if you can of the vaccum lines. We can help you figure out where they go. An intake leak can have negative effect on your fuel mileage.

I'll try to get a picture tonight, it decided to downpour while I was trying to get things back in order. I've also notices a whistle when I accelerate, it honestly sounds like a turbo whistle that I can't figure out where it's coming from.

Does the air box pull that much air?

The air box has a 3/4" hole in it, try taping it to see if it makes a difference then try taking the filter out to see if that makes a difference.

Does this change anything? Some guys tell me they don't get enough air and some tell me they get to much air...

Next question is, I have an EGR valve and an EGR vacuum control solenoid, do they work together...

I feel like an idiot but when it comes to the V10 motors I have not a clue, anything else I know enough to get myself in trouble.

That whistle could also be from a vacuum leak which explain a few of your symptoms. Like dkf suggested get some photos up of the lines. Also like EXv10 suggested the sound could be from the airbox. A temporary piece of tape will help eliminate that as a source of the sound or not.

Yes, they do work together. The valve is just a dumb valve. The control solenoid tells it when to open and close.
