Hey gang! My wife's 2005 Cavalier is acting up on us. When she got home tonight, we smelled gas real bad. I popped the hood and noticed liquid (which I assume based on smell was gas) pooled around where 2 of the spark plugs go into the engine and also on another part of the engine nearby. I'm guessing she's having a problem with spark from what I'm reading elsewhere, has no idea when the plugs were last changed, or maybe compression? I know the fuel filter is due to be changed but don't think it can be the problem. No other leaks or anything. No dripping on the garage floor. She said the car runs just fine. Am I on the right track or are we looking at $$$$ to fix? Also, is it safe to drive in this condition. I'm leaning towards no but she'll want to know why.
You seem to have a fuel leak. It isn't leaking around the plugs, and it isn't compression. It probably is either a fuel pressure regulator or the fuel rail.
I think you need to have a pro look at it before it burns the car to the ground. A tow truck seems like a good investment right now.
