Engine Swap

I own a 1988 f150... My truck has a fuel injected 302 and i recently replaced the transmission. My transmission is a 4 spd with OD. The person i bought my truck from got it out of a field and put a different motor in it. My motor is due to be rebuilt but the fact that the truck sat in a field i have a wide variety of wiring problems in connection with the fuel system. The tank selector switch metled once and i replaced the switch and still when i switch tanks my lights start blinking so i stopped switching tanks and only use the rear tank now. Instead of buying a wiring harness I was toying wtih the idea of putting in carberated motor so that the wiring wouldnt matter cuz thats where all my problems are. I believe i have a c6 transmission but i dont remember for sure. Is there a 351 that will bolt up to my manual transmission? Or if not how hard would it be or what would i need to do to convert my 302 over to carberated so that i dont have to deal with the wiring. I'm fairly new to all this im not an experienced mechanic but im learning quickly. I know by doign away with fuel injection i have to change my fuel system. If anyone knows anything or could give some advice to a rookie your help would be extremely appreciated. I love my ford truck and i dont want to get rid of it.

Dumping EFI wont take care of the blinking lights problem when you switch tanks. Somewhere you have a damaged wire, bad connection or a bad ground. ANY 5.0, 5.8, or 4.9 will bolt up to your tranny, it is just a matter of finding the correct flywheel for you application. If you really want to have the hassle of carburation, the way to go is buy a dual plane manifold, and edelbrock carb. Once you do this, you have to buy a pressure regulator and regulate your pressure to about 4 PSI. Hope this helps

Going further away from stock is just adding to your confusion. EFI is really a simple system, and TOTALLY unrelated to the problem you're having. Even a dual-tank carbed truck would have this problem. Fix what's wrong and learn about EFI. It's not as difficult as the old-timers thought and in many ways, it's MUCH easier.

Get a Haynes manual and look at the wiring diagrams in the back - the ones for carburetors are MUCH harder to read than the EFI ones, and they'll help you see how simple it is. They'll also show you which wires to trace to the tank selector valve and identify your short. When the tank problem is fixed, you'll find the EFI runs better under all conditions than a carb ever could, and parts are getting cheaper & easier to find every day. Soon, it'll be cheaper to build an EFI beater than a carbed one!

Dumping the EFI would be a big mistake. Don't be scared of EFI, it isn't as bad as a carburetor-trained gearhead might think.
