Just want to give everyone a headsup on your Sync product. I started another thread on the Vehicle Health Report. That battle continues elsewhere...
For those you tech weenies, like me. It really bothered me that I could never get the text messaging capability to work with either of the two cell phones I carry (not to mention my wife's, the kid's and anyone else I could get close enough to pair with! . I did some research and found out why this doesn't work.
Ford and Microsoft decided to adopt the Bluetooth protocol called Message Access Profile for handling text messages with Sync. Currently only a handful of phones have this bluetooth profile. Some of the LG models and some Motorola versions do support MAP. Interesting enough, even Microsoft's current Windows 7 mobile solution doesn't support it (trust me, I rode my Microsoft employed brother-in-law on this).
Ford is working with RIM to get the next generation Blackberry to include this profile.
So... for any of you who may be up for a phone upgrade, keep an eye out for MAP in the bluetooth specifications to determine if it will work with Sync. Hope this helps.
This was and still is a pet peeve of mine but for differrent reasons - the biggest issue is the proprietary nature of the bluetooth stack that supports the Message Accessing Profile. Until someone releases an open source stack with the MAP profile supported, only those manufacturers who have licensed it from BlueSoleil offer it.
Not even Microsoft's stack supports this profile. The Android developers to date have been dishearteningly quiet about whether they will support MAP in future versions of the bluetooth stack built into the Android O/S - not sure where Apple is either.
Most of the smart phone packing world is SOL for now.
I share rdenis's sentiments on this situation. I am due for a phone upgrade and the only ones my providers sells that supports MAP are junk. The high end products including their new Thunderbolt don't support it.
It was a feature of the truck I wanted. Both of my kids do 99% of their communication with me via text (BTW -- what ever happened to the good old days of calling someone). Considering my state just issued a state wide band on texting while driving, this issue is something I wish can be resolved.
My android with verizon does not work...kinda sucks.
Shane
Yeah, I know. All of the "smart" phones I looked at, were dumb when it came to reading text messages over Sync. Even the new Verizon Thunderbolt won't work with it.
My newer BB Torch has MAP as an option. I just looked at it, and both message types available are "enabled"
It fails to upload....
Sorry I missed the "fails to upload" comment. I will take a closer look at the Blackberries. I know my Bold does not have it. One of the articles I read said that RIM was working on adding it. Didn't know any had the MAP feature today.
Just looked up the specs on the Torch. It definitely has the MAP and should work. When you connect the phone, does it say the phone does not support text messages? I didn't see the phone book access profile listed. Can you download the phone book?
My driod will take my phonebook. Just no text messages. EVERYTHING else works great.
Shane
Yep that is one of the symptoms. I have 2 phones. The Blackberry Bold that downloads the phonebook and a Casio g'zone phone that does nothing! I had to download the phonebook onto a flash drive using one of Sync's utilities and then loading it into the unit.
Neither can do text messaging.
Shane - I know you hunt. I stuck with the g'zone phone because the thing could run forever on a charge and wasn't affected by the cold. All the previous phones I had would discharge after being out in the cold for a few hours. Does the Droid hold up okay?
I have the first generation driod. Doesn't get that cold here,..well it did last year and I didn't notice any difference. I like my 1st Gen droid because while working, I tether it to my laptop so I'm able to get online.
