Get codes. In the mean time pull out the VSS, clean & inspect it, then replace. Check trans fluid level and smell for burnt smell or odd color. Oh, and get the codes! Good luck partner. May be time for that 5 speed
yes sir, that means the tranny is in limp mode. basically it doesnt know whats going on right now and is upping the line pressure so it doesnt smoke its clutches. Thats why it will shift weird. typically your speedo will stop working when the VSS dies but it may be just be giving bad info to the tcm. in my experience, cleaning the sensor has not done anything for me and there about 25$ from ford FYI. if the VSS is not the issue then you may have a code saying TC slip error or internal clutches issue. and youll know what that means...
No burnt smell color is good. If I wasn't married I would just swap in a manual but the wife isn't big on spending that money on a truck I drive 2500 miles a year unless its actually needed lol dang women
I put 35s on it I wonder if that could have tripped up the vss. I bought one vss that is I won't be able to codes till monday
No, the only thing that can screw with the VSS is an internal failure or debris stuck to it from ring/pinion wear. Does the speedometer bounce when you drive it?
That's exactly what my 97 T-Bird did. Ford dealer wanted $900 to replace wiring harnes to transmission. If you look under the front of the transmission that harness has probably deteriorated on the outside allowing the wires to short together. I took a small vacuum hose split it length wise and placed it over each wire and then taped them shut. Total cost was about $1.85. That was 6 months ago, haven't had a problem since then.
When my VSS was bad, the speedometer worked fine. Just because the speedometer works, doesn't mean the VSS isn't bad. It's a very inexpensive part, so it wouldn't hurt to change it unless you're really strapped for cash.
I see your truck's on 35s. What is it geared at? I know big tires can kill transmissions if the gearing is not adjusted.
Whack, just tell your wife your little boss (daughter) will be heart broken if she can't ride in your truck. Most of the time the frontal approach doesn't work, LOL.
