I replaced my passenger side ball joints two months ago which entailed pulling the knuckle and axle shaft out.
I was just under the truck and noticed black oil seeping out from behind the dust seal and down over the lower ball joint.
I park my truck on a fairly clean concrete floor in the garage every night and haven't noticed any drops on the floor so it is not leaking that much but it does has the ball joint pretty wet.
Could this be a bad seal or just residual oil from when I pulled the axle out?
When I originally removed the axle, the shaft was dirty, and rusty but no oil was present.
I would bet it is residual, when I pulled mine to do ball joints, i used a rag on a broom handle like a bore brush for a gun after running my shop vac up the tube and the rag definitely had some gear lube on it. As thick as it is, i would guess it would take a while to seep out, being as it sits essentially level most of the time.
I tried to be very carefull when I reinserted the axle but since it is so long and tip heavy I do remember having to force it a tad to get it all the way in.
I am hoping I didn't mess up the seal!!
I guess I will clean it up a bit, put the hub unit back on and run it for a while and keep an eye on it...and keep my fingers crossed!!
