So my ears are telling me that it's probably time for some new pulleys. The last time I bought these types of pulleys was probably 7 years ago at auto zone (back then I didn't know any better). I recall getting the same plastic pulley (same part #) for the idler puller as the tensioner pulley. They worked fine and life went on.
I am now more picky, more patient, and financially better off then I was back then. I've done a bit of looking and see that there are a wide variety of brands and sub types of pulleys the will allegedly work.
What I'm wondering, are there some brands that are better quality than others? ie, stronger materials, nicer bearings, etc. Should I look for steel, or is there an advantage to plastic or nylon such as lighter weight offering better throttle response (I'm sure it would be marginal if it existed at all).
The Gates brand belts, pullies, and tensioners are good quality, have used them for years. A little more money than the no-name parts but as they say, "you get what you pay for".
Get steel, i had a little alignement issue and 3 idlers didn't survive, the belt always ended eating them away. I then replaced it with a steel one (of some unknown brand) and it has worked quite well so far (if the bearing eventually fails it will be easily replaceable too).
