Replacing Engine.
I have a buddy that wants to sell me a 77 Bronco 302 engine for $300.00.
He says there is nothing wrong with the engine.
Will a 77 302 be a direct replacement for a 87 302 ????
Of course the extranal parts of the engine would be replaced with the 87 parts. Intake, Valve covers ETC.
Thanks in advance.
the 87 is fuel injected, the flexplates/ flywheel have different balance, the 77 will not pass emission tests if your state has them.
you will spend a lot of time getting it in and working right, and then will still have less feel of power .
I would either rebuild stock motor or step up to 351w.
In other word is there a web site that talks about the swap ?
Also does anybody have a 351 that I could use in the Dallas, TX area ?????
Thanks in advance....
Are you looking for cheap running engine to replace high mileage engine?
Or are you looking for more power, reliability, durability??
You should be able to find a good running 351 in a town like yours, so you should be able to do this swap easily, but there are still some minor changes to do.
For example, the 351 is slightly wider than the 302, so the exhaust will have to be tweaked. also, the engine computer will have to match the 351w. It is also best to get an engine from same year, since in the early (86 or so), fuel injected motors, a lot of changes were made rapidly, causing some differences in computers other systems. Later models have MAF fuel injection instead of speed density systems.
Basically it all comes down to money and reliability. the cheapest is to keep what you have, aand the closer to stock, the more reliable and easier to get parts to fix it will be.
I found several decent junkyards in the DFW area - one I particularly remember was South of I-20 near Crowley, Rendon, or Wilmer. If you don't mind a drive, there's a REALLY good one in Carthage.
