*official* 400 build

Well, I started a thread for my parts list for this thing and I got my block, heads, and everything else today, now all I got to do is order my flat top's, put my valves in my heads (already shaved), order the rebuild kit, and then start scraping up pennys to order my cam and valve train... (By this point I'll be out of cash in my project fund..)

The of course my headers and such.

Pics:

That's all I got for now..

Is my old lifter, bearings, timing chain and gears, and cam worth saving? If not I'll get it out of my way and throw it on the scrap pile...

Well I shoot competitive a lot and hunt little. I used to have a bowtech constition, traded it to get my transfer case rebuilt for my 78, now I'm shooting a 09 captin for hunting and competiton. I'm shooting carbon express CXL 250's for comp and beman bone colector series.. Crap I forgot the name of'em, they're the same as easton axis arrows. Anyway yea, that's my dads truck, we both shoot.

Ok, so I need the technical gibberish on what timing set to order, also, I've been thinking, I want to be able to drive this thing by this time next year, what kind of compression ratio am I going to be looking at being .30 over, angle ground heads, and stock style pistons?
I know flat tops are preferred, but I want to have this truck running and driving as soon as I can, while staying in budget, and flat tops just don't fit in my budget right now, plus I'm young (dumb) and I don't need anything close to 400 HP 350-375 HP would be sufficient and close to 400 tourqe numbers would be great, I would settle for 8.5:1 compression but I would feel better at 9 or 9.5:1

Thanks guys, I'm having money trouble and my budget gets smaller everyday it seems... But I'm NOT stopping on this truck, it will not be the one that got away..

Pistons are available for the 9.5 CR, depending on your combustion chamber size.

LOTS of info here, so look around the site and check out the catalog.

Same site, but pistons here:

You're probably not going to get the compression near 9 -9.5 with stock pistons and 350-375 hp is out of the question. The original compression was 7.9:1. I know you said flat tops are not in the budget, but PLEASE sell something or take out a loan, anything, but don't use stock pistons. You only want to this once, maybe good ole dad can front you an extra $240.00 for the flat tops that go with the original heads.
There's alot of folks having money problems now and it's understandable if you can't swing it now, but I just don't want you to say I wished I had used those flat tops back when I had this engine apart.

That's pretty impressive, I messed my rotator cuff up last year, so my scores have been waayy down... But a couple of weekends ago there was a shoot with a guy I loathe, soo I sucked it up, filled up on my pain pills and shot, ended up 2 down on the 3D range.. I was pretty happy, I spanked that dudes ***.. He was like 10 or 15 down.. he's a hardcore cheby guy and a mathews guy, my ford driving bowtech shooting butt spanked his!!

Looks like I have no choice but do flat tops now..
And this build is all out of my pocket.. Soo no loans from dad.... Maybe I can find some more stuff to sell..
Hmm.. Anyone want a R/C rockcrawler? Paid 300 for it, I'll take 240??

Anyway.. I guess I'll do the botom end first then do valve train when I have the money..
I need to borrow the turtle wax logo to represent this build..

That's the smart way to do it. It's a lot easier to install pistons now and not have to pull that heavy thing back out again. When you're through with this engine, you'll be amazed at the difference these pistons, new cam and timing set will make even with the original heads. Good luck and keep us up to date.

Any set that fits the 351C or 351M also fits a 400.
there many to choose from.
For good performance I wouldn't use a stock replacment set for a model after 72.

I found dealing with Tmeyer inc. for my engine parts was the best for me and he is more knowlegable about these engines than most.

If you build the 351 scrap the crank and get a 400 rotating assembly..
400 can be built up pretty decent, 351M sucks giant camel *****.
