I have a Comp 35-420-8 cam and I am trying to figure out what springs to use. Comp recommends to use thier 986 springs. Because they are double springs, I will have to machine the spring seats. Any other options that can be recommended? I have a new set of trick flow 110# springs that fit the unmachined heads. Can I shim them a little to get more pressure and still be OK... I put the springs on a milling machine with a postal scale and an install height of 1.800". They showed about 115#. I ran them down the .533" lift of the cam and they were just shy of 300# with plenty of room till bind. I added a .010" shim and at an install height including shim of 1.800 I had 120# and still no bind at .533" and 300#.
So, do you think I can run the trick flow springs? Should I run them with the shims?
All the seat cutters show an ID of .630", but the 986 springs have an ID of .697". Do I need to use a spring locator with that much difference? I can only find OD cup locators that fit the 986 springs. Then I would have to cut down into the head to make up the thickness of the locator??
I hope my questions are clear... Any advise is appreciated.
