U joints

Hey guys, I just got new tires last weekend and flushed my trany. I got a trip on Wednesday to goto the races at Texas motor speedway and we are going to haul the fifth wheel down there. Now I have a pretty good vibration at around 40-45mph. I took the truck in and had the tires rebalanced today. They were out of balance but it still does it. I have been told that it could be u joints at those speeds. Does that sound right? I get it up to 55 and it smooths out then when slowing down at about 45-40 it vibrates again then smooths out once I get past that. Sorry for the long post but I only got a few days to figure it out and get er fixed. Thanks in advance!

Carrier Bearing

Might take a look at your carrier bearing in the middle of the rear driveline.

Considering this just showed up with the new tires though, I would still be suspect of them.

Did it have the vibration before you mounted the new tires? If not, there can be many different things that can go wrong with new tires that will cause a vibration. Also, balancing tires is a bit of an art depending on the machine your tire shop uses and how well they know how to use it.

Lastly, if they are using the tape applied wheel weights, they have been known to fly off quite regularly and usually come off within a couple miles of leaving the tire shop, if they didn't clean up the wheel first. Where I used to work we always used a wire wheel to clean the steel/aluminum wheel down to a fresh surface before we applied the weight.

If the vibration did not start due to the new tires hopefully somebody else can help you out.

How can I check the carrier bearing?

No vibration before the tires. I know they are not the tape on weights. Also had the front end looked at and all was good.

Who manufactured the tires? I have seen many tires built out of round and nearly impossible to balance out.

Do you have the same size spare? What I always suggested to my customers was to change out the spare on each wheel until the problem went away, then you knew which tire/wheel it was. Then, if we found the suspect tire, we would rebalance it again and if that didn't work the tire shop should give you a replacement tire...at no extra charge to you!

It is not at all unheard of for nearly every tire manufacturer to build a bad tire every now and then.

x2

x2 at what rbsample said, if this came with the new tires, its almost sure to be a tire. If you can go back to the tire shop, have them put a pencil against each tire spinning on the balancer, one of them is bound to be "square"

Rob and Tom they are BF Goodrich commercial t/a's. Yes the spare is the same size. I'll give that a try tomorrow and if that happens I'll take it back and see if they will do the pencil thing for me. Thanks guys!

Anytime Shawn!

BFG is my tire brand of choice but they all make a bad one from time to time.

Good luck and please let us know what you find.

I agree about having the tires reblanced There is a colored dot on the tire the should be lined up with the tire valve stem then balanced. Check that and if that isn't it check u joints.
I also have the commercial t/a's and I was watching the $10/hr tire guy mount one he was going to not match the dot up with the valve stem. He just didn't know any better. And look for a place that has a Hunter Roadforce balanced. It is the best on the market. It will tell if you have a bad tire . It will tell tire run out and balance it. Most have a way to give you a print out of what is going on. It cost more per tire than reg. balancing. Just my 2cents.

I would lean a little more to the u-joint. Look at all of them with a good
light, if there is one starting to go you can see evidence of rust dust
coming out of the cup before you can physically feel slop when trying
to move the shaft.

Had this happen to my jeep. No vibration before the new wrangler tires. When i hit 60 it vibrates in your spine. had the tires rebalanced twice. Tire shop gave up and i gave up arguing with them. They kept telling me it was something else. Jeep don't see 60 very much and that was a couple years ago. So i don't worry about it anymore and i still have it. If it was my truck and at 45. I would put up a fuss with the tire guys. Jeep don't shake it just vibrates like if i had studded snow tires.

my truck is the same as what you describe i just got new tires also but im leaning towards u joints cus its fine before 40 and fine after 48ish so if the balance were off it should keep getting worse the faster ya go, right? my supercab short box is good 0-40 and 48 to 85 ish, try to keep it under 80 just bad at decribed speeds

Thats a negative szotty, if a tire is out of balance it will usually only show at a certain speed then go away again.

Another thing I just thought of Stroker. If the vibration is in fact coming from one of the tires, if you feel it more in the steering wheel, check the front tires. If you feel it more in the seat, check the rear tires.

Put on new ball joints, aligned front end and rotatated tires. Went on a three thousand mile trip pulling a 30 foot camper. Seemed to have a 'rumbling' of the front tires only at certain speeds and only on certaing 'road types'. I passed it off as just the hi-ways. When we got home and I started driving the truck, same issues, front tires 'rumbling' at certain speeds and on certain road types it changes....... I had asked the alignement people to balance the tires, but went I picked up the truck they said they 'for got' and that I did not need them balanced any way.

Ideas? I am planning on getting the tires balanced to check that and if that does not help rotating the tires. I will also check the carrier bearing.
