Finally pulled the heads off the 89 7.3 that blew. Too much fuel, too much boost, 12PSI, 1250 dgrees on pyro, post turbo. Piston 6 holed with crack to ring land, 2, 4, and 8 have visable cracks in center of piston. Head cracked to pre chamder I think that was on 6 also but not positive had both heads off before saw crack. Haven't checked 1,3,5,7 pistons for cracks. Too busy to check more, putting 6.9 together to replace 7.3.
Picture of piston in my garage.
I can't attch pics, but the #6 piston is in my garage. The one with rust in cylinder. engine been outside since pulled out of truck in early January. The other 2 pistons are from the 6.9 that is replaceing the 7.3. The 7.3 looks like it might have been bored out once before. I will get more pics of the damage after I get the 6.9 done and installed.
P.S. how do you get the Pre-chambers out? I wanted to use the ones from the 7.3 to lower the compression on the 6.9.
Actually tried a screwdriver, ground to fit through injector hole, Didn't work. Think I will just use the pre-chambers that were in the 6.9. I was just trying to lower the compression in the 6.9 because I am turboing it.
were these the pics? you sent them to me so if they arent the right ones ill take them back down. Friggin crazy with the thread imprints on the one piston.
