hey i just bought a 2WD ZF for a 351 for $25 i haven't pulled it and i was wondering if i can change the tail shaft so i can use it in a 4x4 if not i can always use it in my high boy project
You can change the shaft just a matter of finding one. It looks like a different cover on the end of the trans bolts on.
so i can for sure ur saying cool... and i know where there is 1 i was going 2 buy the trans out of a scrapyard but when they where unloading the truck i guess the 1 fork went through the case so i will just pull the tail shaft off ... thanks
you got to change the shaft and the whole back half of the case, Its really the back .25 but you get the idea. The reason for this being the intermediate housing is made in to the back of the trans.
pro70golfer14 is right, you'll have to change the mainshaft along with the tailhousing, which will involve a complete teardown and rebuild. If you get your hands on a 4x4 version for the same engine, you can probably swap the main case between the two, as long as the preload on the gearset is correct.
