Engine stalls

Brief history: 2002 F350 Diesel, 75000 miles: On 3/31/2011 truck starts ok, after driving 1/2 mile truck starts to bog down and finally stops. After letting truck sit for 4 hours attempt to start engine after tightening one battery cable, engine starts but is running very rough. After driving truck for 1 mile park overnight. The next morning (4/1/11) engine starts but going less than 50 yards the engine starts to shake and begins to lose power the same as the day before. At no time did any warning lights come on and engine would not start again on 4/1/11. The batteries on three years old, could it be that both need to be replaced and if so would one or two bad batteries be the cause of the problem? Thank you very much for your opinions.

Could be your batteries need to check voltage during a crank, should not be any lower than 10.5 volts. On another note how's your Oil is it Full???

Thank you for your help. The truck is now it's way to the shop and the batteries will be tested the first thing. Hope that is all that is wrong. Thank you.
