1. Does anyone know if off road diesel (dyed red) fuel will affect the NOx sensor into contaminated DEF message and can the computer be reset for this code after the fuel is flushed from the system without replacing the NOx sensor? Dealer says NO.
2. Can the tech see on the computer if the regen operation is working at the right frequency and how many times the truck has gone into regen since the truck purchase/
Guess I should give more details involving these questions; We stoped at the Indian Reservation where they have 1 fuel pump with 1 hose is regular diesel and 1 hose on the other side that is off road red dyed fuel. With out noticing I filled the truck with the off road. about 200 miles latter the contaminated DEF and MPH reduced to 55 mph in 200 miles. Took it to the dealer and was told it was the NOx sensor and it was caused by the off road fuel and it was not covered by my warranty and it will cost me $1250.00 to replace the sensor and drain the fuel system and change all the filters. Does this seem reasonable? Sign on the pump said ULSD. Dealer says off road is different celon rateing.
I also thought it was the same fuel except with red die and not taxed so not legal on public roads.
In fact, I don't think you can use it off-road in some states in vehicles that are designed for on-road.
Is it possible when a company (Shell) gets their batch of fuel from the refinery they don't add their level of cetane to their dyed off-road batch?
Different brands are known to have different cetane ratings so that would mean the company increases that rating.
Just a wild idea.
Regardless, I don't see how it screws up the NOx sensor in 200 miles.
Not simply setting off an alert but needing replaced.
I call BS...but how do you fight them...you are damned if you do and out the money for sure if you don't...I would push back as hard as possible to make them prove the red dye in the otherwise USLD fuel was the root cause of the failure.
red diesel has higher levels of sulpher in it I havent heard of any that is produced in ulsd but I may be wrong. the nox sensor is suseptable to the sulpher content of the fuel it will coat the sensor and render it use less it will also coat the def injector and cause it some damage which may have caused the contaminated def lamp to come on. the def lamp works by measuring the restiance between the rods that indicate the level of def in the tank increased res. or decreased res . will cause the processor to think there is contaminated def in the tank with this it will limit you to 55 mph you will need to drop the tank drain and flush it reinstall the tank and fill with fresh def.the nox sensor may have gone bad if you took the truck off road ford is workind to find a repair now I was told.
no the tech canot see the frequency of regeneration the critera are must be 50% cloged , 11 psi. of back pressure cetain has to do with the temp where the fuel is used average in theus is a blrnd at 45 cetaine
I have talked to two different dealers that deliever to farms and construction sites.They say fuel is the same and a dye added to ulsd to show no show no road tax paid.I have a 30G tank that I get off road to use in equipment at home small tractor calls for ulsd
There should be no difference except color. It has been a couple of years but the guy that I had deliver diesel to the ranch said that they pump from the same tank & dye it themselves... That being said - in my area the places that sell red diesel is getting fewer & fewer..

I have also seen very few places that sell off-road diesel. I find it hard to believe that a different tanker is delivering it to these few and far between places. More likely same truck just adds dye into storage tank.
I agree that you should push back as much as you can, but you are basically screwed at this point. The dealer is going to come to their own conclusion and that is what you have to live with.
UPDATE.....Ford Area Rep. has agreed to send a sample of the fuel in question to a lab to test and if the sulfur content is ulsd Ford will pay for all repairs. He told me ford doesn't care what color the fuel is, it just has to be ULSD. Testing will take about 2 days. He also said that because I drove the truck to the dealer right away when the message came on that by running through a couple of tanks of quality fuel we might clean the NOx sensor and save replacing it. They are changing all fuel filters and purging all the fuel lines and then resetting the computer. Then after driving they will see if the contaminated DEF message comes back on at which time the sensor would have to be replaced. The Ford Rep. went out of his way to be helpful to me. If the test comes back bad then "it is what it is" and I'll have to take it like a man.
