I just replaced the heads on my 1976 F-250 360 cid because of a burnt valve.
I have spark at the plugs and fuel at the carb.
I have set DUI HEI distributor with number one at TDC and matched the rotor to number one on cap.
Ran wires with firing order 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8 same as before I started this project.
All I get is backfire.
Please help
just a guess, but it sounds to me like you may have the distributor is set at number 1 tdc exhaust and not compression, try moving the wires 4 wires over, exactly opposite of what you have now and if that is the case it should start
^^ That would have been my next thought. Set on exhaust instead of compression stroke. Could also be that the balancer ring has slipped and isn't reading TDC throwing your timing off.
Everytime i do something like this, i set the timing just like you did but then go ahead and set it with the timing light by cranking the engine over without connecting gas line to carb so that when the two mix the fire stays in the engine.
