Excursion trouble

2000 Excursion 7.3 I have been experiencing trouble for some time now. A year ago I put it in the shop and they found the pick up boot tube boot broken off and in pieces in the fuel tank. They removed them and put a nwew boot on.

Truck ran fine for a while but it started doing the same thing again. It starts to surge as if it is not getting fuel and then it will only go about 30 miles an hour sometimes less than that. I dropped if off at the shop but wanted some of yall's experience thrown in here. I don't believe the pick up tube was ever the problem as there are two fuel pick up spots on the pick up tube.

No codes have been thrown even when they had it surging at the shop. They are installing a fuel pressure gauge this time as I insisted they put one on.

I just read that thread and I am with you, I can do it a whole lot cheaper than they can. I will do this if the new foot is broken off.

What are your thoughts on the surging? Seems like it is just simply not getting the proper amount of fuel. Do you reckon the broken foot has something to do with this?

The "old" pickup boot his known to create air in the lines....kind of a foamy version of fuel. The in tank mod will help get rid of that.

When I speak about surging I mean it surges and my speed drops to 32 mph. THen it stays that way for a while then drops to 20 then to 12 and then all of a sudden it takes off and gets back up to maybe 40. Then the process starts all over again.

Any thoughts. They have yet to yank the tank so I have some to get the mod parts and do the mod yall spoke about.

Does it run rough when it drops speed? When you say they didn't pull any codes? Do you know which reader they had? These trucks will give very little info and no codes when using an ODB II reader. You need AE or some other specific reader to get true codes.
Hopefully someone else will chime in here with more info.

I am not sure what code reader they are using. The truck runs really rough when this happens. Like it is only hitting on half the cylinders.

Tomorrow they are pulling the tank. They tried to blow air through the fuel line to the tank and could barely get it through. I am going to get the items on the list to mod the pick up tube amd remove the boot and mixing chamber. I am also going to add the racor pre pump filter. I don't know why but I got a feeling the problem is in that boot or in the screens in the mixing chamber.

Sounds like a good place to start troubleshooting since you do not have any codes or a CEL light coming on plus the fact that they can't blow air into the tank. I did this mod on my F-250 and I just ordered the kit to do it on my Excursion. Here is a link:

I like the link to the kit. I just got through running around finding the parts to get to the shop.

I decided to use a detroit diesel filter head and a detroit primary filter becuase I have a bus with the detroit remote mounted filter heads, primary and secondary. The WVO side of the bus will have the same primary and secondary filters. So I decided to use a detroit primary filter on the excursion to limit the differnet kinds of filters I have to purchase.

They should have it done by WEdnesday or Thursday. I will report back on the findings then.

same problem

Ihave a 2003 ex that out of no where just started the same thing on sat and progresivlly getting worse. If I pull over the injectors sound real noisy and a couple of times it stalled out . If I shut it off and let it sit a couple of minites it starts up noisy then quiets down and then I can drive it a little while I was worried about hpop problem but it did it this morning when it was cold. I put a fuel pump in it 6 or 8 months ago same issue and a ipr valve cause it thru a ipr code . The guy that did the work (was a friend of a friend ) a stealer mech. tried to screw me on the fuel pump didn't change and told me he did found this out a month later pump was real noisy and started acting up again looked under neath a well and behold my old rusty looking pump .after a few choice words he did finally put a new pump in . Now my worry is that when he had it the first time he said the pick up was clogged and I had to put a new one in I just have this fealing he just cleaned it out and took my money . My problem sounds a lot like yours Im checking my codes tomorrow then droping my tank keep posted and trust no one but the members on here they are everyones true freinds and will be here every day of the week!

Oh don't worry about the geammer! I just got all thr parts to the shop today. I have dealt with them for nearly 25 years and they are as good as they come. Small shop in Wallis, Texas called Sliva's Automotive.

As soon as I find out how it turns out I will post here again. Theast time this happened we found the plastic pick up boot was in pieces and broken off.
With this mod I am nit even putting screens back in the tank. I am placing the new filter in the frame next to the tranny. In theory this should be the last time that tank comes off of the truck.

Alright fellas I picked the truck up this afternoon and the mods are finished. Runs like new again. I didn't realize how much power I had lost from the slow choking of the fuel system.

The boot was intact as it is not that old. The two tube screens were completely blocked causing the restriction.

When I get into the lab tomorrow I will photograph the screens with a macro lens to show the choked out system.

I thank you guys that threw the information my way. I do firmly beleive I won't have to remove the tank again, at least anytime soon.

03 7.3 EX

That's good to here since your problem sound just like I'm having .Ijust scaned my truck tonight and the only code was a p1247 I hopeing it's from the truck running out fuel and not something else the good thing is no ipr codes. If I get a break from the rain tomorrow I'm going to see if I can blow some air back to the tank . I'm hopeing it's a clogged pick up screen and not a hpop or a injector problem. Any feed back from anybody out there is appreciated on the code it thru thank's
