My Dad and I were talking this evening and he was saying how he doesn't need the power of an EFI 460 in his 1990 F250 4x4 for what he does. His truck is a lariat and is absolutely mint and only has 115,000km's on it. I have an 84 F150 4x2 that is basically a toy and not needed for daily driving, it has a rebuilt 351W in it with some dress up items and is obviosuly carbed.
What we were thinking is to swap the 351W into his and swap the 460 into mine, the thing is he wants to keep EFI and I want to keep a carb. We then would also have to look at transmissions as he has a 4 speed auto and I have a C6. Are we dreaming or would this be something thats somewhat possible for a somewhat decent buck.
i really thing it is alot more work than you want to tackle. i'm not saying it cant be done but the 460 fuel injection will not just bolt up to a 351 and your 351 stuff will not go onto a 460. your efi truck would be of the road alot longer you will almost need a another efi 351 truck to get all your parts. then if you 351 is not in a similar state of performance to a efi 351 you may have drivability problems with a speed density system
Well, this can be done, but it is gonna take some thinking and some paycheck-directly-into-the-savings-account action. First off, your dad's truck. It will physically accept the 351W, as the F250's came with them from the factory. The motor mounts might have to be changed-I'm sorry I don't know for sure. As far as EFI is concerned for him, it would be best (and cheapest) to find a donor truck of the same era, that came equipped with a 5.8L and a manual transmission. This will allow the computer to be calibrated with the engine, and provide the necassary intakes to do the swap. All in all, the 460 EFI stuff is no good to anyone. Heck ya might even be able to get a few bucks for it, provided your dad's transmission is not computer controlled. If it is, you will have to run the engine/EFI/tranmission together.
On to your truck...
Your truck was not meant to have a 460 in it. It can be done, however. As far as converting to carb...go for it. If your dads tranny is a C-6, your in luck. Your end of the swap should be much easier than his.
Hope this helps
Thanks guys those are some great answers. After thinking about it a lot it may be more then it is worth. I would probably be better of just building up my 351w a bit more and my dad can do the same.
