The dealer has been digging in on this problem. Yesterday they put an infrared gun on the exhaust components to take readings to compare against another unit. My manifold is 200 degrees hotter than any other unit on the lot. Dealer thinks it may be running leaner, which will cause it to use more fuel, leading it to run hotter... He alluded to the excessive heat as being a problem, but stopped short of saying that.
Will be taking it in to get the fuel reading next...
I'm not sure on the mileage... I've always suspected it is lower than it should be, but I have nothing to compare it to. Yes, I do agree with you, but, again, nothing to compare it to.
An extreme lean condition like that would be using less gas ie better mpg. Or it could be way too much air. Could be an o2, MAP, pcm programming or even a cooling issue for it to be running that hot
Everything with the mixture was to spec... and they updated something regarding whatever controls the mixture. I've noticed no difference. Service writer said that all exhaust components underneath were 140 to 180 degrees hotter than a comparable truck, the right catalytic converter was 208 degrees hotter than the comparable vehicle.
So, obviously, the muffler is superheating, which is causing the clanking... But, what is causing something to produce that kind of heat? That is where they are heading with it tomorrow.
I have a 2011 6.2 regular cab 4x4 and mine does the same thing. The clanking sounds like someone lightly hitting a ball peen hammer against a metal pole. Not the normal clicking sound you usually hear after engine shut down. Matter of fact there is no clicking sound just a clank every so often. I just thought it was normal. I have even heard it on start up with the engine warming up but not as much.
Mine starts three or four minutes into the truck running, and doesn't stop for almost two hours after the engine is turned off. Not pleasant when camping.
I also keep mine in the garage and can hear the clanking in the house while I'm watching TV. I have a feeling if I take mine into the dealer they will say its normal. I'm surprise your dealer is being so responsive with this problem.
They kind of had no choice. You sound exactly like me... Sitting there watching TV and you can hear it over the sound of the TV through the firedoor. At first I thought it was normal, and parked next to another one and it wasn't doing it, even though the owner had just shut it off... so that's when I started asking.
I don't know if you read this whole thread, R, but the dealer replaced the muffler twice to no avail... wait til I'm done beating up my dealer and Ford, then you can march into your dealer with the cause. How many miles on yours? I was fine with the problem while they worked through it, until I found out about the excessive heat that goes along with the noise.
