My 2011 F250 SD is garage kept. When I park it, the rear end clanks for over an hour... loud enough to be heard inside, on the other side of the house. I'm assuming this is normal, and the dealer confirmed that it is, and I only imagine it is caused by metal parts cooling down... but for over an hour? Sounds like someone is taking an occasional hammer to the steel underneath.
It's the 6.2 with the 4.3, if that helps.
So, definitively, is it normal, and what is causing it? Thanks, boys.
So no one else has this issue? I have confirmed that it is the heat shield(s) clanking away back there, not only for over an hour after it is turned off, but it does it while the truck is running, too. It is very loud, and I have a hard time believing this normal.
Does anyone's gasser 250/350 clank loudly after it is shut down? I parked it an hour and 20 minutes ago and it's still a'clankin' away down there.

I have the "tinking" sound from the metal cooling. However, it is minor. Certainly couldn't hear it behind a closed door. I notice it as I walk away from the truck. Non-issue for me.
I don't hear anything that loud coming out of mine, especially an hour or so after it's parked. I hear the slight "tink, tink, tink" afterwards but it's barely noticeable and only for a short time. My commutes are only about 20-30mins and the temps are still pretty cool here in PA but I'll keep checking as the temps increase.
You could get under there with a small hammer/screwdriver and lightly bang around on the heat shield, something may be loose.
Just talked to the dealer. He said (this time) that this was an issue years ago and Ford replaced exhaust systems to shut it up. Appointment is Tuesday. Stay tuned...
Dealer confirmed an 'issue.' They did state that the clanking was excessive... they said the sound is coming from the muffler, and are going to replace it and the tailpipe assembly. Replacement will be early next week... Stay tuned...
Been back from the dealer for over an hour and no more clank! They replaced the muffler and tailpipe assembly and aside from the normal cool down ticking it does, the clanking is no more...
Well, gang, in just a little over two weeks, the clanking has started again. Not as frequent, but definitely as loud. This is a whole new muffler/tailpipe assembly. It was silent for a while, but as the truck got some minor mileage (about 400 miles in those two weeks), the clanking got louder. What used to be about two dozen clanks on the old one were quickly silenced with the replacement, and we're now up to about a half dozen in the hour and a half it takes to stop. Can only assume the frequency and number of them will increase as the truck gets more mileage on it.
I didn't think it had the problem when I first brought it home, and did seem to increase as I used the vehicle... And now, after complete replacement, it's rearing it's ugly head again in the new parts. Pisses me off.
Take it back again. Maybe, if it is due to faulty parts, in this case a muffler, they replaced the muffler with another afflicted unit. Being as your truck is new I would have it in there (the dealership service department) until you are happy and everything is as it should be.
My Suburban would tick (clank?) in the garage for a while and I always attributed it to the exhaust cooling. Never would tick for over 30 minutes and I could not hear it in the house.....
Ticking is normal, and understandable... this is a clank... like someone is hitting an anvil with a hammer.
Dealer analyzed the issue again, with Ford, and they determined that the clanking is excessive. Ford had the dealer perform some alignment procedure, but it did nothing to alleviate the noise. Ford then instructed the dealer to replace the muffler, for the second time. Part will be in next week.
While the muffler is off, because this is the second time, Ford wants the dealer to inspect the catalytic converter, to make sure it isn't shedding pieces of itself into the muffler.
Well, muffler number three is now clanking... Not more than two weeks after it was installed. HAS to be something in either the engine or the catalytic converter that is tossing garbage into it... That's all it can be... right?
Service manager and the writer are in class today, but I left them both a message. Will be interesting to see where this goes from here, with it being the third time it is going in.
Another one??? Lame... In my opinion, at this point, it's probably safe to assume you haven't had 3 bad muffles, something upstream seems to be killing your exhaust.
