Heater Core Question

Need to order a new one from NPD but they list a std and hi output for the factor a/c equiped trucks. Anyone know the difference?

Not sure but high output likely has more rows in it. Many of the aftermarket replacement heater cores for all vehicles are real cheesy and are much thinner with fewer rows and less fin area. If you live where it gets real cold in winter or the price difference is small, go with the high output.

Can he do that? Wouldn't he need the box that can accommodate that? I see something
like "HIGH OUTPUT" embossed on some heater boxes in the junkyards and they look
bigger........

High output heater uses a larger size core. The HO core won't fit into a standard heater box.
Most HO heaters are in non-A/C trucks. Lets face it, if you need the high output heater, then you most likely don't need A/C.....

Also when using a aftermarket heater core, they sometimes are a very tight fit. Had my 89 F250 blow a heater core last year, so I robbed Blue Mule's core(84 F250) and they were the same, two weeks later, that one leaked!! Got a aftermarket and had one heck of a time getting it back in the box (even tried it on the 84 truck with same results)

Just don't mung up the pipes while going through the firewall, a 2nd person with two wooden dowl rods to guide them through the firewall WILL HELP alot!

Mine was leaking where one of the tubes was soldered to the tank, I re-soldered both tubes and
it's been fine so far (about 5 months).

Typically the high output actually has those words cast into the housing, and as stated, is typically a non-factory air truck. You will find them with dealer air though. For simplicity of replacement, hope for a standard output, the high outputs are a bugger to change, you have to remove the air box, as they are in the engine compartment. The hoses hook up at the air box, not the firewall.

I done that before, but when a leak formed inside the core area I couldn't get to,it was game over for it. Too bad all the aftermarket ones are aluminun, still can't "solder" that stuff. I did try that aluminum "solder" with no success.

does any one know the dimensions of each? Mine is 7 3/4 x 7 1/4 x 2

based on some online searching I think that closely matches the hi output model. Mine was super easy to change as the pipes went thru to the engine bay...I have factory installed air. dont see any markings on the cover.

I looked up some stuff on Rock Auto's Web site... I didn't see the year & model of your truck anywhere
in the first post so I chose 1984 *****-nilly (I imagine they're all the same).

The More Info link for the first one in the list is (for a standard output heater WITH AC) says:
<table class="bdydesc" border="0" cellspacing="5"><tbody><tr><td>Aluminum</td></tr> </tbody></table> <table class="bdytext" border="0" cellspacing="5"> </table> <table style="width: 100%" class="infotext" border="0" cellspacing="5"> </table><table class="moreinfotable"><tbody><tr><td>Core Width: 7.25"</td></tr><tr><td>Core Height: 7 1/8"</td></tr><tr><td>Core Depth: 2"</td></tr><tr><td>Inlet Connection: 5/8"</td></tr><tr><td>Outlet Connection: 5/8"</td></tr></tbody></table>
Can't find any measurements for the Hi-Output variant but I'd imagine there's more than
half an inch difference....

High output dims are 7 x 7.25 x 2. The pipe arrangement is completely different between them. The high output has long pipes, while the standard has short pipes. Haven't come up with a pic...

?? Yours has the dims that are closer to the standard output... I took those dims from the Autozone website. No pic, and most of the ones I find pictured are the regular output, don't know why they don't get the right pics on there...If yours was easy to change, it was standard output, as the true high output heaters are a pretty involved job. Old man's 84 has one...

Why don't you just get one from your local parts house, that way you can take it back if it's wrong?
