Hello all! I was hoping someone could help settle a dispute between buddy and I.
My buddy was looking at his bro-in law's 7 lug center caps. Finding it odd that the cap only had 7 lugs, they took one off and claim to have found 8 lugs.
I say it's got 7 lugs (from reading FTE ) and he swears to 8. Whos right?
Assuming the truck in question is a light duty, late model F250 (has the F150 body style) it will have 7 lugs. The heavy duty(Super-duty F250 & F350's) all have 8 lugs.
Someone owes somebody pizza & beer.
As was said, if its a newer f250, then it had seven. HOWEVER, there was a point when ford had a 7 lug cap, with 8 lugs underneath. Can't remember exactly when, but it does exist. Maybe it was a hint of what to come!
Today, while checking the front brakes and researching parts, I came across the 8 lug 2WD version in the parts search. I was looking for replacement rotors and found 7700GVWR on a 2WD with 8 lugs. This was for a 2000. Could be a mistype as all other rear and front rotors were 7 lug. Mine's a 7 lug.
Hmmm, aldridgec's post makes me think we both may be right. The pickup in question is indeed a "Light Duty" F-250. Oh well, I guess he buys the beer and I'm buying the pizza.
Thanks a bunch for the replys....
I'm a Ford guy through and through. But sometimes I wonder what they were thinking.
What makes it seem strange to me is the front and rear would need to be the same or we'd have seen/heard some complaining about rotating tires. You'd have to remount them every time if front was 8 and rear was 7. What would the spare's wheel look like? If both were 8 lug well... my center cap wouldn't fit over an 8 lug wheel, it's just not set up for that. It's notched all around to fit against the 7 lugs. To me it seems counter productive to have to make a center cap that looks like a 7 lug but fits an 8 lug wheel anyway. Ford would have had to tool to make both caps and wheels as the basic design of the LD/7700 stock rims haven't changed since their inception , that'd be wasted time and money... hmmm not great business sense.
