My day started by adjusting the gear box to the tsb 05-22-1. I ran the adjuster down to feel resistance then backed off 1/16th of a turn. Test drove and felt ok at slow speeds and as you go faster 20 mph + it gets really tight hard to steer. So I back off 1/2 to full turn same thing. Then I ran the adjuster screw out I think 2-1/2 turns same thing really tight feeling. So looking down at the box clockwise is tight and counter clockwise is loose? Do you think I did something wrong to damage the box? Thanks for your help.
Tried to run adjustment all the way back out same thing feels really tight and hard to steer. One thing I saw looking at the bottom of the steering box the shaft where the pitman arm bolts to I see shiny part of the shaft about 1/8" like when I ran the adjustment down it ran the shft down out of the box? Could that shaft be stuck in the steering box and the adjustment screw be up or out? Do I need to drive and things will get better and back to normal? This is 2006 with 78k V-10. Not sure what to do at point any help?
I adjusted my steering box nut only about 1/32nd of a turn (clockwise/tighter) and that removed the slack without making it bind. At this point, if you suspect you've slightly jammed something in the steering box, I'd back the adjuster nut out about 1 turn, start the engine and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth to (perhaps) unstick what's stuck, and then readjust. If you can see the pitman arm shaft moving up and down, I'd tap on it from below lightly to unstick it.
I don't understand why your truck is harder to steer at speed - that should be unaffected by the box adjustment. You should either have play, or have the box adjusted correctly, or have it get tight when turned to full lock either way (too tight). Those are the three conditions. Having the box tighten up at speed makes no sense (although anything could happen!). With 78K on the truck, you should not have huge amounts of wear in the box.
