The problem is when im going through a turn, and the turn is complete I usually let the wheel slide through my hands until straight again. The wheel seems to be hanging up and will not return to staight unless I tug it aliitle. Could my steering box be failing? Just fluished the system with brand new ATF. It was doing it before the flush thats why I flushed it. Any suggestions or tests I can preform to narrow it down.
There are a few things that are easy to check, and Ill list them in the easiest to find to hardest:
Steering stabilizer - if the piston is bent or the cylinder has a ding in it this could cause a sticky spot
Gear box worm and pinion gear mesh - if your steering wheel has no play in it (slop) and is extremely responsive (small steering wheel movement, movement of the tires) this will cause the front wheels issues in return to neutral
Alignment - If the caster is way off or the camber is way off (due to bad bearings, ball joints, etc) the wheels may not want to come back to true center or bind when doing so.
A visual inspection of your steering system and front suspension should give you a good clue as to what is wrong. If you have never replaced your ball joints this is a likely cause.
