Well my original muffler on the 99 looks like swiss cheese with the rust holes. I was wondering if anyone has tried one of the cheap turbo style mufflers from O'rileys and how does it sound? I would rather it be quiet like stock vs sound like crap but I would prefer to hear it a little. I am not wanting to spend much money any help would be appreciated.
I have a Dynomax super turbo on my 06 v10 and love it don't know how a 2v whould sound but would not worry about power if you still have the converter.
pushing 415 cubic inches of love through a single cheap turbo muffler will definately cost power, and most likely sound like crap (cheap being the operative word here.) As a guy currently with no reliable source of income, i feel your pain, but the $90.00 rock auto or the others are getting for OEM replacement sounds like the safest bet. good luck!
I'm running a Flowmaster catback its a 70 muffler. Its just a bit louder than the stock one but not very much... A bit lower rumble, not as tinny as stock. I'm thinking it was around the $200. range... Cant tell you for sure my other computer went stupid and I restarted it from scratch and lost the link....
I think you'd be happy with it. It isn't loud and doesn't pop and sound like a old farm truck when you let off... Sounds good.
I have the flowmaster one as well, dont think mine cost that much though. I also replaced the pipe between the cat and the muffler as well to make it look nicer. I like my sound, not to loud, not quiet either, just a nice low rumble to her.
My vote is a FM 50SUV, good rumble, little louder than stock and a little louder than the FM70. I was going to go with a single in/single out 50 with a stainless tip keeping the stock tailpipe but went with a single in/dual out instead. Sounds very nice. I have a polished stainless tip to work on the stock tailpipe if you're interested .
Thanks guys sounds like I should look into the flow masters I should know better than thinking about a cheepo muffler I have had them before and they ether rust out quick or split at the seems and come apart.
Do you think if I ditched the cat I would notice any difference ???
I have Flowmaster dual 40's on my Mustang and LOVE them, although they do set car alarms off if I'm hitting the gas pretty hard.
I also have a 60 series Delta Flow on my Jeep and it made a big difference. After doing all the research, I'll go with a series 70 on my SD. I like the bigger case of the 70 series. I have a Spintech on there now which is sort of a Flowmaster knock off, and I hate it. Very tinny.

Yes. The exhaust will stink, the noise will be obnoxious, and you will likely lose power and mpg.

So in this situation is it better to go back to stock? (Asking for my own sake)
I'm fairly certain that the Spintech that the PO put on there is too small (3" in and out, but a SMALL case), so I'm primed for a change. I don't know if I'm losing power (have nothing to compare it to) but have noticed gains when I've put Flowmasters in on other vehicles.
Maybe.
I was attempting to make the point that eliminating a functional stock cat on these trucks will NOT gain any meaningful power, and some tests have shown a loss. And it will definitely not help mpg.
The stock exhaust system on these is extremely (extremely!) good. Nothing like the disasters coming out of Detroit in the 70's and 80's. Ford put a LOT of research into it. I do not know of a single replacement that can get equal power, reasonable noise levels, and durability. Some may squeak out a few more peak HP, but at the cost of low end torque or more noise.
There just isn't any "easy" hp to be had with just exhaust tweaking. It's already there.
I did swap just the muffler in mine. The FM 50 Big Block MIGHT free up a few lb-ft or hp without getting obnoxiously loud. I noticed a difference, but my stock muffler had 180 K miles on it. A new stock muffler might have done the same. I went FM because it was so much cheaper and sounds better to my ear. But I also know it will have about 1/2 the life. And if in salt use area, 1/4 the life.
All other things being equal, a larger muffler case results in:
1) Quieter
2) More flow (hp)
3) Deeper tone
So for a small muffler to be reasonably quiet, it would have to be grossly restrictive (think stock Harley muffler). But if you can fit a large, well designed muffler, you can get quiet AND very powerful (thing BMW muffler).
That's why I went 50 BB (NOT the SUV or other 50 models, the Big Block variant). The biggest Flowmaster makes, by quite a bit. Still able to hear the radio even when towing, and good power.

That's pretty much what I was looking at. I didn't especially think it was going to make more power (although I suppose it's possible) but HATE the sound of the Spintech. It's very tinny, and I've noticed that when I get up over 3K RPM's it sounds "weird", almost like a valve clatter. Not sure if that's the mufflers fault or not but if it's too small, it could be building too much back pressure.
The Series 70 is a5" deep case by 22". It's probably twice the size of the one that's in there now.
I just didn't want to make a mistake by putting that one in. I'm not in a salt use area (Southern Cal) and have had good luck with them holding up in my other vehicles.
Many have run the 70 and are QUITE happy with it. The 50BB is similar, but 2" wider (12" instead of 10") so the chambers are bigger yet. Case is almost as big as stock muffler - but still fits quite well in stock location and orientation.
As an aside, I have no idea why they called it a 50BB rather than a 70BB or an 80.... It does not fit the normal pattern in FM's where a higher number is bigger, more effective muffler.
In addition, it is much more similar in construction to the 70 than any of the other 50's (Super/SUV, HD, Delta Flow, 4x8, 3x10, etc)
