Motor hiccups?

I've noticed an increasing amount of what I call "hiccups" out of my 7.3L. Driving along at say 55mph and it will hiccup or act like it lost ignition or fuel for a split second. There have been times when coming to a stop after letting off the pedal, it will hiccup and suddenly die. Also recently I've noticed it is slightly harder to start as in it wants to spin up longer, but if i go ahead and let off the ignition key it will fire up.

Is there any history with these motors having such a problem or some common part that needs replaced? I recently replced the fuel filter and cleaned out the bowl, but the issue still reminas. I do have an ever slight fuel/oil mix leak from up top at or around the HPOP.

Have you done the quarter mod to the under valve cover connectors? If the motor is running fine but quits and either restarts immeaditly or after it has cooled this could be the problem. You can check it by testing the glow plug continuity using an ohm meter. Remove the harness going into either valve cover and test the outer two prongs on each end. You should get a reading of at least .9 ohms, if your reading is OL (no continuity) the harness has most likely come undone under the valve cover. There is a great cheap mod for this, just search for quarter mod and you will find what you need.

Mine did the hiccup thing for a while until it was suggested on here to change the CPS. Did that and no hiccups in almost a year now. Change it, if it helps, great, if not, you have a spare for when it does go out and don't buy an aftermarket, go OEM. Clay has them in stock and ready to ship

Had never heard of the quarter mod? Can I get a little more info on this or is there a link?

I believe I actually have a new CPS bought a few years ago as a result of some long forgotten posts about it I had read on here not long after joining up. Guess now is as a good a time as any to make the change.

That aside, if not that or the "quarter mod", what would be a logical troubleshooting step to take afterwards?

The CPS is still my guess, the quarter mod is usually called the 50 cent mod and for my it was the 75 cent mod and is basiclly shimming the UVC harness to prevent it from coming apart. The fuel/oil leak needs to be looked at. Is it fuel or oil?

My vote for the cps as well. My truck would do the same thing until it got worse and die completely

Drive around with your windshield wipers on, see if that cuts your engine off or causes the hiccups to be worse.

I had this exact problem right after I bought my F250 and couldn't figure it out. The CPS was suggested and even though I'd thought of that possibility, I dismissed it because I never had those symptoms when the CPS gave out on my Excursion. However, when I learned others had suffered the same hiccuppy symptoms, especially when their wipers were on, I quickly reconsidered the possibility.

Shortly after, on a rainy day, with my wipers on, my hiccups became a complete shutdown. I coasted to the side of the freeway and within a few minutes, restarted the engine and drove home.

I have a few spare CPS's so I popped a new one in and never had another hiccup.

Drive around your neighborhood with the wipers on, see if that does anything.

Been raining here last few days. I haven't really thought to notice the wiper coincidence. I have noticed the last few times i drove it that it's getting a little more finicky about starting. This morning for instance after driving it for a few miles i topped it off with fuel and when i got in to start it back up, it seemed like it didn't want to start up. Spinning real fast with spark, but just didn't act like it wanted to take off on it's own. I simply just let off the ignition and sputtered to life and seemed to run fine.

Is that another symptom of the CPS?

As inexpensive as CPS's are, why not get one, put in in and if it fixes it, all good, if not, then you have a much needed spare. It will leave you stranded, I know, I put my first CPS failure off just about one time to many. Left me stranded without a spare and with a truck that would not start.

Mine used to do the exact same thing. One day it died while I ran in to a restaraunt to pick up food and I came out and the wipers were halfway up the windshield (it had been raining), another time it died just idling in traffic with the wipers on. Changed the CPS shortly thereafter and it hasn't done it since.

Turns out i had a recall still outstanding on the CPS and the Speed Control fused jumper wire mod. Had it done on Tuesday.

So far it still a little hesitant to start up normally. It has not done the hiccup thing yet after two days.
