Hey Guys...I changed my oil and put on a 7.3L motorcraft oil filter, flushed cooling system...refilled and all that jazz, replaced all belts and hoses...getting ready to take off and travel around for another 6-9 months...Anyway, after doing all that it seems I developed an injector knock...I was ready to install all new injectors and get the ip re-timed...So, I read that I should crack the injector nuts to help find which injector was knocking....did that on all of them...one at a time...
Well after doing that...the knock went away...as usual when I first start her up I barely get any smoke and then no smoke from then on...My question is what happened to the knock? Surely just cracking the nuts and tightening them back up didn't get rid of the knock or did it...My brain says this doesn't make sense....
Anyone else ever had this happen? If so, what could it be? Did taking the pressure off and then tighten back up knock off some scale or something?
I had a problem similar to this. In my case I had a rough idle with a knock so I narrowed it down to one. I kept taking it on and off with the same knock, then after the 6th or 7th time of re seating it, it was good. Maybe it wasn't seated properly and air was getting in?
Thanks 91dirtydiesel...I didn't think about that...I did notice that the #8 cylinder injector nut seemed really easy to crack. I could have cracked it with my pinky finger alone. All the other ones took a bit more strength to crack. I also noticed that #8 was slightly wet at the top and around the bottom of the injector. Funny thing tho I didn't notice a miss or anything like that before the knocking started. It may have been loose enough to lose its "seat" but not loose enough to cause a miss. It's just that I've never heard of a slightly loose cap or "seat" causing a knock...I guess it sure could tho..I hope that is all it was. I did tighten all the caps back up pretty tight or should I say 1/8 to 1/4 turn past snug.
Well maybe I got lucky or it is a sign of the times. I think these injectors are only about a year old if I remember right...
