Ranch Hand bumper ?

Ok so here is one for all the guys with “ranch Hand” style bumpers. I just picked one up and I am wondering is it safe to drill and tap a fitting into it and fill it with air. And if so what would be a safe amount 60-80psi. It would be nice to have something to break lugs on the side of the road or fill a tire. If anyone has done it and have pics or suggestions let me know.

Good idea, I hadn't ever thought of that. I would have 2 concerns though - I'm not sure the welds on the pipe are air tight, so it may not even hold air, but secondly it's not stainless steel so I would be concerned about rust on the inside of the pipe. That said, give it a try, worst comes to worst you can weld it back shut.

i dont think they seal them up all the way they leave weep holes in them so water dosnt stay inside the bumber and rust out but u could always just weld shut idk not sure i would want compressed air in a bumper u get in to a small fender bender and the bumper may explode just saying.

I don't know about exploding, but I can't see a tube bumper having enough capacity (air volume) to be worthwhile for this purpose.

good point, but just enugh to break lugs with an Impact wrench in the rain on the side of the road might be worth a shot

What you do is drive to Mexico and stuff that sucker full of drugs, drive back and bingo !!! look at all that money you have just kidding

Is there enough pressure that you can store in there to work a impact wrench? I would think that if it was plausible then peeps would have made it known a long time ago. Good luck and post up results.

On the amount of air - I figured that a 5" pipe - about 7' would hold 6-8 gallons... Now - the Ranch hands are 4" - at least mine is... I am going to do the same thing - but on my own pipe bumper - not my ranch hand - mainly because of the volume, welding it up "right" because I am not sure of their integrity, and actually I like my own design better.. Just ran out of time & so I have to put a ranch hand on for a while.

On another note someone hit the right side tubes around the headlight on mine & it bent (very little ) but on my homemade bumpers - all my framing stock - except for the main pipe is 1/2" x 1 1/2" bar stock turned edgewise & it very strong...

I think they're a 4" sch. 40, so assuming an ID of 4.026" I come up w/ 3.96gal capacity using a 6' pipe length so if the total length is 7' that would increase it slightly. So in theory it would hold as much as a smaller household air compressor - enough to air up a tire but maybe not enough to break 8 lugs loose.
