ok...93 F-350 4x4. 5.8 w/ e40d. won't shift to second until about 3500 or 4000 rpm. Then when it does finally shift...it acts like it goes straight to OD and skips 3rd. If I shift manually, it shifts a lot better. I've changed TPS, and adjusted MLPS. Truck has 180K on speedo. Just bought it so don't know if and when trans fluid and filter was ever changed. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Start with a complete fluid change and filter. The E4OD likes Mercon V best. My 93 had shudder and hard shifting until I changed the filter and had an entire fluid change done by using a T-Tech machine the lets the transmission do the pumping. Haven't had a problem since, over 18 months now.
From what I understand it has been reblended since it first came out around 10yrs or so ago,,,, Thats when it got its bad rep... Now it is THE Ford ATF..
ok...I changed the MLPS....done a trans flush(wich seemed to help).....and changed the TPS.....still haveing same problem......takes forever to shift to second.....if you drive real easy it shifts fine....if you manually shift it shifts fine.....if it shifts by itself, sometimes it shifts into 4th instead of 3rd....the only thing that pops inmy head is REBUILD!!!!!!
ok...let me run this by everyone....I've changed TPS, MLPS, VSS (in rear diff), adjusted and readjust MLPS, adjusted shifter cable, did trans flush. ok....long sgifts from 1st to 2nd, then when it shifts again it sometimes goes to 4th (unless I have the OD turned off). If I shift it manually it will shift fine. If I start in 2nd, it seems to shift fine. If I disconnect battery and reset computer....if shifts great all by itself for about 15 min.....then goes right back to screwing up.....I don't have a cluse what to do next....any ideas?
Does not sound like a transmission problem.
The Transmission only shifts when it is told to by the PCM.
Was there any codes in that PCM before you disconnect it?
I put LED's in my cluster to see what my PCM is telling the transmission to do at all times.
If I were to guess I would say the PCM is bad from what you said about disconnecting the PCM.
Disconnecting the battery will have no effect on the Transmission.
But you could also have a bad Speed Control Module, RABS Module or PSOM.
