Common sense says getting gas, and not paying for it is theft. And honesty says that theft isn't right. With both items getting in very short supply, station owners have no choice, really.
The one time I witnessed a drive-off, the guy got nailed within half a block by two cops and a border patrol.
Would that all thieves are so dumb.
The local farm fresh grocer here gives you one cent off for $10.00 you spend. Their prices tend to be higher than most others so I wouldn't stop there for gas without a discount receipt.

I was hanging out with my ex while she was working at a co-op gas station and saw a guy fill up with diesel and drive off, then drive back by while the cop was there... turns out he had swiped his card, but it didn't read. instead it rang inside where my ex turned it on. you would think he would have noticed when it didn't give him a reciept.
and that is why i like new jersey. no standing in the weather, having gas or diesel back splash on you at a self serve station pumping your own gas.
pull up, tell the pump jockey what you want, then pay when it is done.
When I was NJ the jockey came running like a little girl after spotting my OHIO plates and told me I couldn't pump my own gasoline. I found it weird but I told him he would be unemployed in Ohio......
We're not allowed to pump our own gas here either. Although, I guess we are allowed to pump our own diesel, in some circumstances, none of which I can understand, or unless we have a fleet card like Pacific Pride, where we can pump anything ourselves. It don't make no sense.
It's never mattered to me much, frankly. I don't mind pumping fuel. But I don't mind having them do it either.
I remember the days of full service, they would clean your windshield, check oil, put air in tires and had those on the belt change holders. Seniors in high school could really hit on the girls doing that job.....

Something quite similar happened to me with about $150.00 worth of diesel. The card swipe was supposed to turn the pump on. Pump was on, I pumped my fuel but I did not get the reciept. I went inside to get the reciept and the clerk informed me that the transaction had never been recorded. The clerk had not turned the pump on. Believe me, It can happen. This is why I will never leave without a reciept.

Yeah, that was THE job to have in high school. Always had a tank of gas and a carload of girls always got the best service.

Yeah, back during my HS days, I worked at a full service station. Those were the days. Bikini clad girls stopping in for fuel before heading to the nearby lake. Always got lots of invites to join them after closing time, and most of the time the tip was stuck in the top of the swimsuit (either half) for me to retrive. The supervisor nor station owner could never understand why I got so many tips from girls, when they couldn't hardly even get near the car before the girls grabbed a towel to cover up with...... I guess they just never knew about my after-hours life.
Sadly, the station closed, and was the last full service outlet in the area. I shoulda bought it. Hindsight is, as they say, 20/20.......
I love my local BJ's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scan your membership card, pump then stroll over to the cash cage and pay the person inside.
I would love to see gas pumps evolve into a vending type of machine. Insert bills and pump.
I haven't bought gas on a credit card for over 10 years. I hate using my debit card period. I love cash and usually carry at least $100.
Tim, why not use a credit card? I use my credit card for fuel all the time and get a percentage back. Pay it off every month and then there are no interest charges.

I'm boycotting the banks as much as I possibly can in this day and age. I use my DC very sparingly and I don't use either of my CC's at all. They will probably cancel my cards but I don't care. I pay cash for everything.
My house is financed through USAA and my car note is with FMCC. Until the banks apologize and give it all back, they can kiss my other end.
