Let me give y'all the rundown first. My truck broke down on me the other day. It cut off while I was driving down the highway. I noticed I wasn't getting fuel to the carb, so i replaced the pump. Upon further inspection I found that the distributor wasnt spinning. We pulled it out and looked at the camshaft and noticed it wasnt spinning when the engine was being cranked. I either have a broken timing gear or a broken camshaft. My problem is I don't have a FSM or anything to get in there and do this the right way. Can anyone direct me to write ups or FSM's or offer some input? I'd really appreciate it.
You MAY luck out and find the plastic gear has just worn or broken and a new timing gear set is all you need. Some report trouble getting those gears off, but you'll have to try it to find out with yours.
If it's worse than that, like a broken cam, imo it's time for a rebuild, as you'll want to take the engine apart and get all the metal out of it anyway. The plastic parts are bad enough, and sometimes plug the oil pump pickup, so you may be in for more fun anyway.
