Question Shock Absorbers - Recommendations

I have 60K miles on my 2000 Expy 4x4. I plan to replace the shocks as soon as I can afford it. I'm tired of the bouncy ride provided by the OEM shocks, which has gotten a bit worse. So far I am leaning toward the Edelbrock IAS shocks. From what I have read, they provide a good compromise between ride and control. These comments are from online reviews and other info. I'm not looking for a stiffer ride. Anyone know of any drawbacks to these?

I was going to put them in also but after reading an article in Trukin magazine on a lowered Expedition I called the guy. He stated that the Edlebrock shocks were good at first but after 10,000 miles or so they "faded away" and no longer were up to snuff. I just put Koni's on my 2000 because I use them on all my vehicles since 84. They are considered the best and are adjustable and lifetime warrantied. The bounciness has definately decreased. I put in Hotchkis anti sway bars and will be installing the WMS racing lowering springs/torsion key hardware this week. Lowers 3 in rear and 2 in front.

I put Monroe Reflex shocks on my wife's Exploder and am impressed with them. Supposedly they work much the same as the Edelbrock ones. It didn't make it ride any smoother but it does handle better....less body roll Certainly no bounce.
They were quite a bit cheaper than the Edelbrocks too.
Monroe builds enough shocks that I hope the quality is good so they last a long time.

Equivalent to the Monroe Reflex is the Rancho RSX (Monroe makes Rancho shocks). Summit has buy 3 get 1 free right now. I installed these on my Expy and love them. They offer a great ride and soooo much more control.

I appreciate the feedback. I only have one opinion against the Edelbrocks. It is hard to believe that shocks at $69 each would stop working after 10K miles. What kind of driving was this friend doing? If anyone knows the prices of other brands, please post them. Thanks.

Has anyone used the Rancho RSX's? How are/were they?

I have the Edelbrocks on my Bronco (6 shocks), and I hate them. Within 6 months, I had 3 replaced under warranty for leaking and binding up. They offered an improved ride in the beginning, but are now quite stiff. Personally, I don't recommend them to anyone. Edelbrock doesn't like to replace them either, but they do have a lifetime warranty. My Bronco has no lift, and runs stock tire sizes. When I get shocks for the Expy, I am looking at Bilstein, Koni, and Rancho.

Koni's are $79.80 for my 2000. This site is the cheapest I found and I order all my shocks from them over the years.

Ken, look up ^.

I've had Rancho 5000's and now these RSX's. I thought the 5000's were much too stiff for typical Houston road conditions (horrible) but were good off road. The RSX's are a much better choice for daily driving and still perform very well off road. If money is not object, go with the 9000's with in-cab adjusting.....but be willing to fork out some big bucks.

I wouldn't go with the Edelbrocks. I've read hundreds of shock threads on several truck forums and the consensus is they are a good shock if when operating properly. Problem is many have had serious problems with these shocks.

I guess I am a lucky guy!

I have been running the Performer IAS shocks for a bit over a year, and have not had (knocking on wood) any issues.
I like the ride quality, and cant complain yet.

question though.
How long did you guys with problems run them before noticing it?
and how will I tell if I develop a faulty shock, is it obvious, or will I just look for abnormal tire wear, etc?

I went with Monroe Sens-a-Tracs Standard for the front and Coil Over for the rear. A hell of a lot better than the stockers. The coil overs were about $100.00 each though. I think the standards were about $40.00 each maybe less?!. I have no complaints about them

Jhran,

Withing 3 months of installing my IAS shocks, both rear's were toast. One leaked all over the axle, and was quite ovious. the other locked up. What I mean by that is once I pulled the shock out, I couldn't compress it to save my life. Actually, when I removed it from the lower mount in the truck, it expanded to full length immediately. It was now a spring, not a shock.

About 3 months later, one of my front passenger shocks started leaking all over the place. I noticed it, and got Edelbrock to send me a new one immediately. A week later when I removed the old one, it was also locked up, acting more like a spring.

I have spent over $30 just in shipping to get these replaced under warranty. I am planning on a lift for my Bronco soon, so they will go away and I won't every buy them again.

P.S. - I belive it is luck of the draw on the stock, as a buddy of mine here at work put them on his Blazer, and he hasn't had any trouble at all.
