My 2001 Ford Escape's low coolant light will not keep from coming on. I noticed it the other day and so I checked the coolant overflow and it was a little low. I followed the instructions in the manual and added the 50/50 mixture to the overflow. However the low coolant light still comes on after driving for awhile. It doesn't stay on all of the time, it will eventually go off. I am confused! Any ideas?
Check the float in the over flow resivor. It could have some build up on it. Maybe it went low for a while and the rod that the float sits on got dry and left over coolant made it sticky.
My 2001 Escape just turned over 55,000 miles and my low coolant light has been going on and off also (usually after I drive about 40 miles). My coolant level is ok. I have had various problems with this vehicle so I called the dealership right away. They told me that if the coolant level is ok then it is probably a sensor problem and it may need to be replaced, but that as long as I check the coolant, I can drive it until I have a chance to take it to them.
I have to agree with escape radar- most likely a defective sensor in the overflow tank. As long as you keep an eye on the coolant level, it should be OK for awhile.
I think it's probably an oversensitive sensor. My parents Mercury Mystique's coolant light comes on often. Fluid is always within limits and the sensor has been replaced twice. Normally adding a teaspoon of fluid - not even a tablespoon- is enough to turn the light off.
Now what I do when the light comes on is slightly overfill it- maybe 1/8" to 1/4" over the max line. Then the light stays off for 4-6 months.
Just keep your eye on the overflow tank to make sure there's fluid.
I had all three lights come on, check engine, low coolant aqnd the brake light.
Ford has Teck Service Bulletins on all three for faulty sensors and the brake cap will not hold pressure and leaks out the brake fluid.
Fords Customers service dept (dealer will deny all) will assist you with the cost of replacing the cap and sensors (about $500) You can buy the part however for less that $150 and install them yourself if it comes to that.
I have been around and around with fORD WITH THIS and they have put me off until I went to the NHTSB and got the other thousand complaints about these TSB's, now they want to pay half the cost as a "good will" gesture.
Mine did the same thing and they replaced the overflow tank due to a bad sensor. Seems like it was $70+ but I didn't care since it was a company car at the time.
