I eard that it is possible to set timing at the distributor with a vacumm gauge, does anybody here know if this is possible? How accurate it could be and how to do it?
I can figure out tath it can be done at the maximun vacum point, but question here is, how accurate it could be?
I saw an article once on doing that. They said to advance the timing til you got the highest vacuum reading and then retard it til it just starts dropping off. Then roadtest it and check for pinging.
Sounds like quite a bit of trial and error.
I think I prefer to use a light
The vacuum method allows for all the wear on the engine, and any mods you've done. The timing light only lets you put it on a number you've gotten from somewhere, ostensibly the factory setting, before it had any wear on it. If you're just guessing and use the light to see where you're putting it, then THAT'S trial & error! If this site doesn't show it, e-mail me & I'll attach a 1.7M .doc that includes the technique.
