Hi guys, thanks for letting join your wonderful website. Now here is my problem. My 1999 expy xlt triton v8 won't start. When I try to start it, it turns over but it won't crank. The only way I can get it to start is to keep my foot on the gas pedal while I turn the key and hold the pedal down for about 5 minutes and when that does work, the engine idles very low. I'm not sure how to explain that, but, when it starts the rmps only goes up to the 0.5 line or the big line between 0 and 1 rmps. Please help! Oh yeah, and the check engine light came on this past Saturday on my way to the Atlana Auto Show. I just bought this truck and am sooo in love with it I can't imagine that something is wrong with my baby already.
Any idea on service history on your Expy? How many miles on the spark plugs etc?
It sounds to me like your engine is flooding. Bad plugs can cause that. You could also have a bad fuel pressure regulator or something similar.
Seeing that the Check Engine light came on there will be a trouble code stored in the vehicles PCM (computer). I think your first step should be to get the code pulled either by a dealer or apparently Autozone will do that for free. Write down the number or numbers of the codes, not just the description and post them here. Quite likely that someone will be able to help you more
Hi & welcome to FTE!!
I had the same exact problem, but only when it was REALLY cold outside, now that it FINALLY warmed up I'm not having that problem anymore.
I did buy a fuel filter, but haven't put it in yet, I figured that may be the problem.
Keep checking back and read the posts here, there is always something new and helpful here!! Not to mention the wonderful conversation in the General Conversation forum!
Hey guys, thanks for responding I will pass all of your great info to my husband like now!!!!!!!
As regards to the vehicle history, there aren't any major problems, the lemon check came back clean. My husband thinks its the alternator but I don't know, so please keep the advice coming.
The inability of the vehicle to start or idle without pressure on the gas pedal is a classic IAC failure symptom. The problem may temporarily go away when the engine warms up. Some clean the IAC, but I think replacement is the better way to go.
Do a search on this website for IAC. You'll see what I'm referring to.
hi to everyone! i have the same problem with my 97 expo. i ordered the iacv rom pep boys for $50. it'll come in on 9/24/2003. i did that two foot thingy n didnt quite work today 9/18/03. im new here by the way. ford's labor depart. asked for $160 an hour compared to pep boy's less than $50 i believe. i hope this will do the fix cause this is what i use to commute to skool which is about 60 miles round trip. does anyone know where i can get a free copy of the owner's guide or repair manual for free if its free at all. thank u. ill keep u guys posted. pray to the higher man that its just the IACV. DARN!
I concur with the IAC diagnosis. I had the same symptoms (got quite good at two footed driving!). Mine was replaced about 3 weeks ago, no problems since.
thanx 4x4labguy... i hope n pray that this will solve the problem because i go to skool and all. by the way... all u have to do to that the iacv is jus a couple of 7mm bolts rite... but first u have to take off the neg on the battery... if anyone could pls tell me a step by step process on takin the iacv off i would greatly appreciate it. thanx everyone

There is a detailed how-to (thanks to Buzzard) in Matt's Expy Owners Guide (check the top one or two threads on how to get a copy).

That was the only thing replaced on mine. Everything's running good so far.
