I'm having trouble installing my headlight switch's ****/arm into the switch. It's the correct (repro) switch for the year, and the correct 3 3/16" shaft, and I'm aware of the little button on top of the switch assembly...
It goes in all but for a 1/4" or so, and never engages. It will turn the dimmer, but does not engage with anything in order to click on the lights. Is it a matter of brute force?
It is more of a matter of aligning it correctly to engage the retainer. The button pushes the end of the rod up a little to get it to pop out. So you could in theory use the button to engage the retainer again.
Wow! Just called NPD to ship back the defective unit / order a new one... and boom... they're just shipping me one... told me not to bother shipping the defective one back. Love that place.
That is coolbeans. Have you tried to install the shaft into the switch while holding in your hand? Sounds weird, but it sometimes help to "see" the alignment of it. Since you do have a replacement on the way, why not drill the four rivets out and see what is happening? I took mine out years ago to clean the contact surfaces. All I had to do was use a tap to thread the phenolic block to accept screws. I still pop it apart once in a while.
